Australia-based\u00a0actor Russell Crowe has officially joined the\u00a0cast of the\u00a0upcoming Marvel Studios sequel\u00a0Thor: Love and Thunder<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The role is being kept under wraps for the moment and was originally planned as a surprise until photos of Crowe hanging\u00a0out with the cast in Australia surfaced online.<\/p>\n

Deadline confirms that Crowe joins fellow cast members Chris Hemsworth, who is reposing his role as Thor Odinson, Natalie Portman, who plays previous love interest\u00a0Jane Foster, and Christian Bale as the film’s antagonist Gorr the God Butcher. Tessa Thompson, who joined the MCU in Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>, also returns as\u00a0Valkyrie.<\/p>\n

Born in New Zealand, Crowe has lived in Australia for most of his career. He is perhaps\u00a0best known for his Oscar-winning performance in Ridley Scott’s epic Gladiator<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>More recently, he starred in the thriller\u00a0Unhinged\u00a0<\/em>as a road rage inflicted driver who torments\u00a0a woman and her child after a brief encounter. Crowe’s other notable recent roles include muscle for hire\/ private investigator Jackson Healey in the 1970s era Shane Black buddy comedy The\u00a0Nice Guys\u00a0<\/em>and Dr. Jekyll\/ Mr. Hyde in the Tom Cruise led reboot\u00a0The Mummy.\u00a0<\/em>Crowe also portrayed Superman’s father Jor-El in the 2013 film Man of Steel<\/em>\u00a0and had\u00a0a brief voice cameo in the recently released Zack\u00a0Snyder’s Justice\u00a0League.<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

Thor: Love and Thunder<\/em> has already been subject to other casting rumors and confirmations in recent months. Comedic actress Melissa McCarthy was spotted on set<\/a> portraying a ‘fake Hela’ and actor Matt Damon also appears to be reprising his role from Thor: Ragnarok<\/em> as ‘fake Loki.’ Director Taika Waititi and Marvel reportedly wanted to keep\u00a0Crowe’s casting a secret in the hopes that it would surprise fans when they saw the film. The same tactic was used for Damon’s role in Ragnarok,\u00a0<\/em>whose appearance in that film came as a total surprise. However,\u00a0after Crowe was spotted spending time with other members of the cast in Australia, where the film is shooting, fans began to speculate.<\/p>\n

Fellow New Zealander Waititi returns as director for Thor 4<\/em><\/a>, following his first Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok.\u00a0<\/em>Little is known about the plot at the moment, but it appears that Portman’s Jane Foster will be taking up the hammer and becoming the new Thor, much like her comic book counterpart.<\/p>\n

Other confirmed cameo’s in the film include Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em> actors Chris Pratt as Star-Lord\u00a0and Karen Gillen as Nebula<\/a>.\u00a0Crowe was also recently cast\u00a0alongside\u00a0Zac Efron in Green Book\u00a0d<\/em>irector\u00a0Peter Farrelly\u2019s\u00a0The Greatest Beer Run Ever.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thor: Love and Thunder\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is currently scheduled to be released on May 6th, 2022.<\/p>\n
