There\u2019s little question that the DOOM <\/em><\/strong>series is one of the most iconic franchises in video game history. The first DOOM <\/em>title, released on MS-DOS<\/a> in 1993, is considered to be one of the games that birthed the first-person shooter genre and led to its mainstream acceptance. And with the international success of the modern soft reboot of the series, DOOM 2016 <\/em>and Doom Eternal, <\/em>it\u2019s little wonder that many gamers count the franchise among their favorites.<\/p>\n

With the consternation that has accompanied Sony\u2019s recent announcement that it will be closing down the PlayStation Store for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita<\/a>, eliminating in one fell swoop players\u2019 ability to purchase digital versions of older games, it\u00a0may be reassuring to know that the physical versions of some older games will still be available on one console or another.<\/p>\n

For this reason, it\u2019s undoubtedly welcome news that Limited Run Games will be releasing DOOM: The Classics Collection, <\/em>a physical copy of DOOM<\/a>, DOOM 2, <\/em>and DOOM 3, <\/em>on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Pre-orders for all editions of the collection will open on Friday, April 2 and close on May 2, 2021. Unfortunately, as the publisher\u2019s name implies, there may only be a limited number of copies available and, once those are gone, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

There will be three versions of DOOM: The Classics Collection <\/em>released: Classic Edition, Special Edition, and Collector\u2019s Edition. All versions will come with a reversible cover that displays the original box art for DOOM <\/em>on one side and DOOM 2 <\/em>on the other. The Classic Edition will retail for $29.99 and will contain simply the game cartridge or disk. It\u2019s not yet clear whether the Classic Edition will be available for a limited time.<\/p>\n
