The PS Vita<\/a> may not have been a huge success for Sony, but there are many fans who enjoyed the second attempt by the company to go handheld. Part of the reason for this was the great library of games that were available to play on the go. Those who enjoy the role-playing genre should be among the happiest with the line-up.<\/p>\n

The device had quite a\u00a0collection of RPGs that included both exclusives and games put on home consoles as well. These weren’t smaller, unknown games either as many of the RPGs on the PS Vita could be considered among the greatest ever made.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Muramasa Rebirth<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Not often are there side-scrolling role-playing games, but Muramasa Rebirth<\/em> is exactly that. The game was originally published for the Wii<\/a> under the name Muramasa: The Demon Blade<\/em> before being remastered a few years later for the PS Vita exclusively.<\/p>\n

Set in the Edo period\u00a0in Japan, the main campaign revolves around two protagonists and their relation to the Demon Blades, samurai swords that possess the individuals that wield them. Muramasa Rebirth<\/em> also adds four\u00a0separate stories based on Japanese folklore under the title Genroku Legends<\/i>.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Soul Sacrifice<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Games can sometimes fall into using the same formula as other titles, just under a different veil. Soul Sacrifice<\/em><\/a> introduces a wild mechanic<\/a> that makes it stand out in a deep role-playing game genre. In the game, players have\u00a0been enslaved by an evil sorcerer named\u00a0Magusar.<\/p>\n

In order to defeat them, players must\u00a0use a book called\u00a0Librom to relive past fights between the sorcerer and other monsters. The mechanic that makes this game interesting is the need to sacrifice parts of the player’s body to become more powerful.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines<\/h2>\n

It’s always great to see a long-dead game be revived for a remaster, but it’s even better if that game actually got another installment after nearly 15 years. That was the case for\u00a0Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines<\/em>, which is the sequel to the 1999 Playstation game\u00a0Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Set 100 years after the events of the original game, the newer installment revolves around a family that is cursed preparing to fight against a demon. The game involves fighting enemies to earn enough points to continue the bloodline to future generations.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Shiren The Wanderer: The Tower Of Fortune And The Dice Of Fate<\/h2>\n

The first roguelike on this list,\u00a0Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate<\/em> is part of a series that is within the Mystery Dungeon<\/em><\/a>\u00a0franchise developed by Spike Chunsoft.<\/p>\n

Like other games in the Shiren<\/em> series, The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate<\/em> follows a wanderer named\u00a0Shiren and his talking weasel Koppa as they climb the\u00a0titular tower to see if\u00a0the rumors of a god that can change their fate are true. The game revolves around exploring dungeons and fighting monsters that appear in turn-based combat.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Ys: Memories Of Celceta<\/h2>\n

Nihon Falcom is known for developing quite an array of role-playing games<\/a>. One of its best entries on the PlayStation Vita was Ys: Memories of Celceta<\/em>, the fourth\u00a0canonical entry in the Ys<\/em> series. Taking place after Ys II<\/em> but before the events of Ys:\u00a0The Oath in Felghana<\/em>, players control Adol Christin who starts the game with amnesia only to go on an adventure that revolves around mystery and deception.<\/p>\n

Like other games in the franchise, Memories of Celceta<\/em> uses real-time combat, in which each member of a player’s party has specific attacks unique to them.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer Of Arland<\/h2>\n

Another game that was brought to the PS Vita after its initial release,\u00a0Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland<\/em> is the twelfth entry in the Atelier<\/em> series<\/a> and the first to\u00a0release\u00a0on the PS Vita.<\/p>\n

Taking place five years after the events of its predecessor,\u00a0Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland<\/em>, The Adventurer of Arland<\/em> starts with\u00a0a girl named Totori who is looking for her missing mother. Rorona teaches her alchemy, which she uses on her journey around the world to find her mother, who she believes is alive.<\/p>\n

On its surface, Child of Light<\/em><\/a> appears to be a platforming game. However, the game also mixes in plenty of role-playing elements. Child of Light<\/em>\u00a0revolves around Aurora, a girl who died from a mysterious illness but woke up in a new\u00a0land known as\u00a0Lemuria.<\/p>\n

Now, it’s Aurora’s goal to restore the land by rescuing the sun, moon, and stars from the Queen of the Night. The game uses an\u00a0active-time battle system that is similar to the Final Fantasy<\/em> games.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Legend of Heroes: Trail Of Cold Steel II<\/h2>\n

Another Nihon Falcom game,\u00a0The Legend of Heroes: Trail of Cold Steel II\u00a0<\/em>is actually the seventh entry in the Trial<\/em> subseries, which is part of the overall Legend of Heroes<\/em> series. Taking place one month after the ending of\u00a0The Legend of Heroes: Trail of Cold Steel,\u00a0<\/em>Rean Schwarzer and Valimar have escaped only to find that he and his loved ones are in the middle of the\u00a0Erebonian civil war.<\/p>\n

Like its predecessor, the gameplay revolves around turn-based battles, with this game\u00a0following Rean as he travels around the world. Choices made<\/a> in the first game matter in this one.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Odin Sphere Leifthrasir<\/h2>\n

This\u00a0PlayStation 2 classic\u00a0made its way to the PS Vita through its remake titled\u00a0Odin Sphere Leifthrasir<\/em>. The game\u00a0is set in the fictional continent of Erion as a massive war takes place between the nations of\u00a0Ragnanival and Ringford over a powerful weapon known as the Crystallization Cauldron.<\/p>\n

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir<\/em> follows five characters and their connection to the war as well as\u00a0a disaster that could destroy the continent known as Armageddon. The game is a beat-em-up<\/a> side-scroller with role-playing elements,\u00a0all mechanics that\u00a0have been enhanced in the remake.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Person 4 Golden<\/h2>\n

The Persona<\/em><\/a> series is among the most beloved RPG\u00a0franchises out there. The PlayStation 2 hit Persona 4<\/em> is rated among the best in the series. It only made sense for there to be an expansion for it eventually. Persona 4 Golden<\/em><\/a> features the original story of Yu as he moves from the city to the countryside, only to find himself in the middle of solving murders that have happened in town.<\/p>\n

Along with its usual blend of RPG and simulation elements, the remake features an expanded version of the story along with new characters, Personas, outfits, and cutscenes.<\/p>\n
