Last week, the sequel\u2019s highly anticipated trailer was released.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0is the standalone sequel to David Ayer\u2019s\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em>. The first installment centered on a secret government agency that recruited incarcerated super-villains for a world-saving mission. Despite grossing $746 million worldwide and being the tenth-highest grossing film of 2016, the DCEU blockbuster\u2019s plot was heavily critiqued and deemed disappointing by many. Since the film\u2019s release, Ayer has revealed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/zack-snyder-david-ayer-suicide-squad-cut\/\">the original vision for <em>Suicide Squad<\/em><\/a> was altered because Warner Bros. wanted the tone to be less gritty and more light-hearted.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/suicide-squad-r-rated-james-gunn-confirms\/\">James Gunn Confirms The Suicide Squad Will Be R-Rated<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Warner Bros. tapped James Gunn to write and direct the sequel. The tenth film in the DCEU will see a group of villains from Belle Reve Hospital join Task Force X and embark on a mission on the enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. The loaded ensemble cast includes <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/suicide-squad-kill-the-justice-league-harley-quinn-comparison\/\">Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn<\/a>, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark. Joel Kinnaman, who is returning to reprise his role as Rick Flag, described the film as childish, violent, and profound. He noted that Gunn didn\u2019t have to compromise his vision and got to create exactly what he wanted.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DCComics\/status\/1375576020212838400\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/suicide-squad-trailer\/\"><em>The\u00a0Suicide Squad<\/em>&#8216;s explosive R-rated trailer <\/a>was trending on social media and caught the attention of\u00a0<em>Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0comics creator John Ostrander. DC Comics posted the writer\u2019s reaction on social media. Ostrander stated, \u201che couldn\u2019t be more excited\u201d to see the film in theatres and that his initial impression of the bloody trailer was \u201cwow.\u201d Gunn since revealed that Ostrander is a former actor and plays Dr. Fitzgibbon in the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Gunn is currently filming\u00a0<em>The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0series spin-off, <em>Peacemaker<\/em>, for HBO Max. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/john-cena-peacemaker-first-look-live\/\">The upcoming series stars John Cena<\/a> and will focus on his character, Christopher Smith\/Peacemaker. The official logline states that the title character is a mercenary who believes in peace at any cost \u2014 \u201cno matter how many people he has to kill to get it.&#8221; Gunn teased that the show will explore current social issues through the eyes of the world\u2019s biggest douchebag.<\/p>\n<p>The cast of <em>Peacemaker<\/em> includes Danielle Brooks (<em>Orange Is the New Black<\/em>), Robert Patrick (<em>Terminator 2<\/em>), Chris Conrad (<em>Patriot<\/em>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/peacemaker-james-gunn-nhut-le-judomaster\/\">Nhut Le (<em>Kroll Show<\/em>)<\/a>. Earlier this year, Cena stated\u00a0that the anti-hero Peacemaker\u00a0is the exact opposite of Bruce Wayne and would prefer living in a messy one-bedroom apartment than a cave or mansion.
