Although the movie\u2019s trailer was a resounding success, the full-length <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> is proving to be a harder pill to swallow, according to critics.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the previous iterations in the kaiju MonsterVerse, 2014\u2019s <em>Godzilla<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tomb-raider-kong-skull-island-netflix\/\"><em>Kong: Skull Island<\/em><\/a> certainly fared much better in both financial and critical performance, with <em>Godzilla: King of the Monsters<\/em> falling off and potentially costing Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures a fair amount. Running on a budget nearing $200 million, <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> already opened internationally as the biggest release since the pandemic, with China contributing handsomely in its $121.8 million haul worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/justice-league-snyder-cut-best-things\/\">10 Best Things About Zack Snyder&#8217;s Justice League<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, all that doesn\u2019t mean\u00a0<em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> is any good, especially according to the first wave of American reviews, with Collider\u2019s Matt Goldberg calling the film an \u201cempty spectacle and mindless destruction\u201d because of how it fails to integrate the human stories going on in between massive CGI monster fights. Meanwhile, ScreenCrush\u2019s MattSinger calls the film \u201cMonster vs. Script\u201d\u00a0on account of\u00a0<em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> dedicating too much time to its bland human characters, rather than just go all out on the absolute monster bash that\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattGoldberg\/status\/1376557633742721027?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metacritic\/status\/1376563985344958467?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Wrap\u2019s Alonso Duralde notes that the movie focuses a lot more on Kong rather than his giant lizard opponent, warning Godzilla fans that there\u2019s no hint of the latter\u2019s theme song or legendary roars. On a more positive note, all critics pretty much praise the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/godzilla-movies-best-fights-ranked\/\"><em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> action and epic clashes<\/a> between the two titans, for the most part considering them an improvement when compared to the past three movies, as it appears to be easier to keep track of everything that\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it seems that <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> delivers and exceeds expectations for the battles between the two protagonists, as the grand spectacle of watching monsters beat each other up is backed by Tom Holkenborg\u2019s fantastic score, just like in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/justice-league-synder-cut-best-movie-comparison\/\">Zack Snyder\u2019s <em>Justice League<\/em><\/a>. Despite it being clear that nobody is going to see <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> under the assumption that the human plot that ties the film together is anything to write home about, this one might drag down the overall enjoyment of the kaiju deathmatch just a tad more than usual.<\/p>\n<p>With the hype of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/godzilla-kong-internet-cat\/\">many <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> meme trailers<\/a> and the promise of seeing Mechagodzilla in the film, no one who planned to see the movie should shy away from doing so.
