\tGlobal operators welcomed a push by Qualcomm [1] around open RAN 5G networks, highlighting the importance of the approach for broader vendor choice and enhanced network capabilities.<\/p>\n

At Qualcomm\u2019s annual 5G Summit, Vodafone Group head of network architecture Santiago Tenorio (pictured) cited a recent move with the US chipmaker covering joint development of open RAN reference designs [2] as a key step.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, for the first time, we are not just competing in catching up with the incumbent architecture. I think we have a reasonable chance to actually overtake the performance of the incumbent architecture and come up with solutions that are open RAN-based and perform better\u201d, Tenorio explained.<\/p>\n

He noted Qualcomm aimed to accelerate 5G Massive MIMO, a step required to roll out open RAN and enter dense urban deployments.<\/p>\n

Collaboration
\nNTT Docomo EVP and CTO Naoki Tani said the company partnered with Qualcomm as part of a coalition formed [3] in February.<\/p>\n

The operator has \u201chigh expectations\u201d for Qualcomm\u2019s plans to deliver \u201cradio unit platforms with Massive MIMO capabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said those are needed in scenarios of high capacity, such as in dense urban environments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important for operators to swiftly and flexibly provide the infrastructure, settings and the quality to meet\u201d diverse customer demands, the Docomo executive added.<\/p>\n

Deutsche Telekom SVP of group technology innovation Arash Ashouriha explained the company was exploring ways to incorporate Qualcomm\u2019s technology within its open RAN strategy.<\/p>\n

He noted the \u201csoftware and hardware decoupling\u201d with open RAN will create \u201ca much richer ecosystem\u201d, and thus had formed a fundamental part of the operator’s strategy for some time.<\/p>\n

Deutsche Telekom planned to test the approach \u201cin the real life\u201d by launching the first phase of an \u201copen RAN town\u201d in Germany in the next few months.<\/p>\n
