\tAditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla reportedly offered to hand over his company\u2019s sizeable stake in troubled Indian operator Vodafone Idea to the country\u2019s government or any approved body able to keep it going.<\/p>\n

The Economic Times\u00a0(ET) and various other publications in India printed excerpts from a letter sent by Birla to the country\u2019s cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba in early June containing the offer to walk away from the operator.<\/p>\n

In the note, the executive said he was \u201cmore than willing\u201d to hand over the stake to \u201cany entity\u201d the government believes can keep the company as a going concern.<\/p>\n

He added without state support on the three key issues of spectrum payments, adjusted gross revenue (AGR) fees, and \u201cfloor pricing\u201d in tariffs, Vodafone Idea’s \u201cfinancial situation will drive its operations to an irreversible point of collapse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Alongside his role heading Aditya Birla Group the executive is also chairman of Vodafone Idea.<\/p>\n

As of the operator’s latest annual report, for the year ended March 2021, Aditya Birla Group owned a 27.66 per stake in the venture, with Vodafone Group its largest shareholder on 44 per cent. The two companies previously ran separate operations in the country before merging them in 2018.<\/p>\n

Plight
\nThe loss-making operator has been in a lengthy row with authorities in India over AGR taxes, with the company last month losing its latest appeal [1] to have the amount it owes slashed.<\/p>\n

In a stock market filing on its fiscal Q4 results [2] (to end-March 2021) the operator warned on its financial plight which it noted \u201ccasts significant doubt on the company\u2019s ability to make [debt] payments\u2026and continue as a going concern\u201d.<\/p>\n

The letter to authorities reported today (2 August) is far from the first warning shot from one of its founders, with Vodafone Group CEO Nick Read highlighting the “critical” situation in 2019 [3].<\/p>\n
