But for those with conditions that make speech difficult \u2014 such as ALS, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, or post-stroke brain damage \u2014 Google Speech recognition isn&#8217;t properly equipped to understand their verbal tics.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/accessibility\/project-relate\/?_ga=2.238247491.273526662.1636357401-1980585061.1608662473\" georiot-ignore=\"true\" class=\"norewrite\">Project Relate<\/a> initiative could change that. It is &#8220;a new Android app that aims to help people with speech impairments communicate more easily with others and interact with the Google Assistant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Currently in beta in English-speaking countries, Project Relate has three functions. The first is to <strong>Listen<\/strong> to speech and transcribe it to text, so you can copy-paste it to messaging apps or show the transcription to people. The second is to <strong>Repeat<\/strong> your words vocally in a clearer tone so that others can better understand you out in public. And the third is to convey your words to <strong>Google Assistant<\/strong> so it can better understand your commands.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body__video\">\n<div class=\"video_iframe\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EU2oCVlzEZk?modestbranding=0&amp;html5=1&amp;rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;loop=0&amp;controls=1&amp;autohide=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;theme=dark&amp;color=red&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"682\" height=\"400\" class=\"video-filter video-youtube vf-eu2ocvlzezk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/video--><\/p>\n<p>Communication is a &#8220;fundamental human need&#8221; and a &#8220;basic human right,&#8221; says Aubrie Lee, a Google brand manager who named the project. She hopes that technology can bridge the gap between her and others that emerges when they can&#8217;t immediately understand her due to her disability.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to try the app yourself or know someone who can benefit from it, Google is seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc_9fFSD4IAqHaePFebXMBOUML8rEFyZD4DNxG5LaZhpW5QXQ\/viewform\" georiot-ignore=\"true\" class=\"norewrite\">volunteers<\/a> with speech impairments who live in the U.S., UK, Australia, or New Zealand and own an Android phone running Android 8 or later.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers will be asked to record 500 phrases to help train Google&#8217;s algorithm using a beta app, after which they&#8217;ll be able to try using the app&#8217;s functions for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve already seen with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/google-tensor\" georiot-ignore=\"true\" class=\"norewrite\">Google Tensor<\/a> how a Pixel phone can translate speech-to-text near-immediately for texting, or enable a cross-language conversation with excellent accuracy.
