Set to hit PlayStation, Xbox, and PC for $49.99 with a scaled-back approach and a much shorter runtime, Ubisoft indicated it was using Mirage to return to the series\u2019 roots, serving as a spiritual successor to Altair\u2019s adventure that started it all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Mirage wasn\u2019t always its own game; it started as DLC to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/assassins-creed-valhalla\/assassins-creed-valhalla-review-a-saga-worthy-of-song\" >2020\u2019s Assassin\u2019s Creed Valhalla<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameBorder=\"0\"  allow=\"autoplay\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k2Z37iR5DJU\" width=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, we were working on Assassin\u2019s Creed Valhalla and the DLC, and the idea came up to create a specific expansion for Valhalla and go back to the Middle East,\u201d Mirage creative director Stephane Boudon tells me in the Ubisoft Bordeaux office. \u201cWe wanted, as a longtime fan of the series, to go back to this environment [and those] vibes. And it was also near the 15th anniversary of the brand. So it was for us, something we wanted to bring back for the player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mirage DLC pitch went so well for the newcomer studio, which opened in 2017 and has mainly worked as a support studio for others within Ubisoft, it was greenlit to become a standalone game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/body_default\/public\/2023\/08\/30\/dccb8bf6\/dji_0048.jpg\" alt=\"Assassin's Creed Mirage Ubisoft Bordeaux France Office\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/><\/p>\n<p>            Ubisoft Bordeaux&#8217;s France-based office<\/p>\n<p>Ubisoft Bordeaux&#8217;s France-based office<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first [&#8230;], yes, it was a pitch on paper,\u201d Boudon says. \u201cAnd it was even Eivor going to the Middle East, and as soon as we switched, we decided to go with Mirage.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Boudon says Mirage as DLC only lasted a few weeks because, even when creating the pitch for Basim\u2019s adventure, the team was crossing its fingers for the green light to become a standalone experience. \u201cIt\u2019s funny because we did the full work for the pitch for a DLC, but at the end, we already saw on working on the pitch that it could be something so at the end, we end the presentation with, \u201cBut it can be more.\u201d So we pushed a little bit and it worked and was wonderful for everybody.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/body_default\/public\/2023\/08\/28\/144dbd58\/359_reveal_webhero.jpg\" alt=\"Assassin's Creed Mirage Game Informer Cover Reveal Issue 359 Basim Ubisoft Bordeaux October 5 Release Date Gameplay\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At just $49.99, Ubisoft highlights that Mirage isn\u2019t a massive, hundred-hour, open-world RPG like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/b\/features\/archive\/2015\/12\/13\/ranking-the-entire-assassin-s-creed-series.aspx\" >Valhalla or the two Assassin\u2019s Creed games before it<\/a>. But it\u2019s still a full release, a new entry in this long-running franchise. And after playing it for a couple of hours for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/feature\/2023\/08\/29\/cover-reveal-assassins-creed-mirage\"><em>Game Informer\u2019s<\/em> cover story<\/a>, it feels like a breath of fresh air.
