\tMeta Platforms faced further woe in Europe as the regulator overseeing its operations in the region imposed a \u20ac1.2 billion fine for breaches of European Union laws covering data protection, reportedly the bloc\u2019s highest such penalty to-date.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Ireland\u2019s Data Protection Commission (DPC) targeted Meta Platforms\u2019 methods for transferring details of Facebook users from Europe to the US. The regulator commenced its investigation in 2020, but the process was stalled by a legal challenge [1] until early 2021.<\/p>\n

Domestic news outlet RTE noted the fine far exceeds a \u20ac746 million penalty European regulators imposed on Amazon in 2021. It said Meta Platforms plans to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n

The fine adds to a \u20ac390 million penalty [2] the DPC imposed on Meta Platforms earlier this year and a \u20ac405 million charge in 2022 [3], both also related to breaches of data processing rules.<\/p>\n

Commissioner for data protection Helen Dixon stated in her decision that Meta Platforms\u2019 had failed to \u201cguarantee a level of protection\u201d equal to European law, referring in particular to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).<\/p>\n

The DPC ordered a halt on data transfers until Meta Platforms brings \u201cits processing operations into compliance\u201d with regional rules by \u201cceasing the unlawful processing, including storage, in the US of personal data of\u201d users in the European Economic Area.<\/p>\n

Meta Platforms falls under the DPC\u2019s jurisdiction because its European headquarters are located in Dublin.<\/p>\n
