A year on from launch, Control<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0has been going strong with its Foundation<\/em> DLC<\/a>\u00a0and is\u00a0gearing up to unleash its next major add-on, the Alan Wake<\/em>-themed AWE<\/em> expansion. The DLC will be coming out later this month, and with it will come a free update that will make it easier for players to get into Remedy Entertainment\u2019s mind-bending shooter.<\/p>\n

All in all, Control<\/em> was highly-praised when it first came out<\/a>, becoming a frequent contender for and winner of 2019 Game of the Year awards throughout the industry. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s without issues, though, and most of the complaints aimed at the game tend to focus on its checkpoint system, especially with how it applies to the lengthy boss fights in the later game. Since launch, these fights have had no way for players to save mid-fight, and adding to the frustration was how dying can send players rather far back, leading to a lot of backtracking just to get back to the boss.<\/p>\n

This issue will finally be addressed with the free August update, Remedy announced this week in a livestream focused on the AWE<\/em> expansion<\/a>. Amid the fixes targeting the problem, Remedy will be adding new checkpoints, moving Control Points closer to the game\u2019s tougher boss fights, and implementing \u201csoft checkpoints\u201d that could be a way to break up the lengthier boss fights, though Remedy wouldn\u2019t say for sure.<\/p>\n

As welcome as these changes will no doubt be for many of Control<\/em><\/a>\u2019s players, they\u2019re just the start of what the update will bring to make the game more accessible. Along with that, Remedy is introducing \u201cAssist Mode,\u201d a set of in-game options that players can turn on or off at their leisure to change up how the game works in several ways. These options include being able to control how much damage Jesse deals, how much she takes, how quickly things reload, etc. Players will even be able to throw difficulty out the window and make Jesse completely invulnerable, meaning dying will soon become optional.<\/p>\n

As Remedy puts it, \u201cAssist Mode lets you modify the rules of the game to suit your specific needs. It’s important to us that as many people as possible get to experience Control<\/em> the way they want.”<\/p>\n

Rounding things off, Remedy confirmed that the update will also rebalance some combat encounters as well as introduce an upgraded version of Jesse\u2019s Launch ability, known as the Multi-Launch, which lets players hurl three objects at once. Combined with the rest of the accessibility improvements, this should go a long way towards making Control<\/em>, one of the most consistently-underrated games of 2019<\/a>, more appealing to more players.<\/p>\n

Control<\/em><\/strong> is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development. The AWE<\/em> expansion, meanwhile, will launch on August 27.<\/p>\n
