Since the moment Avowed<\/em> <\/strong>was revealed, many have compared it to Skyrim<\/em>. From tone to the apparent playstyle of the game, it’s an easy comparison to make. Many even see it as Obsidian gunning for Bethesda’s crown, as it has seemingly answered Fallout<\/em> with The Outer Worlds<\/em>, Fallout 76<\/em> (and its survival take) with Grounded<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> and now Skyrim\/Elder Scrolls<\/em> with Avowed<\/em>. However, there’s at least one way that Avowed<\/em> could potentially be more comparable to Fallout<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Both settings\u2014Avowed<\/em>‘s Eora<\/a> and Skyrim<\/em>‘s Tamriel\u2014are about as high fantasy as it gets. Dragons appear in both settings, there’s a huge presence of magic, each have a distinct racial structure, and both seem to have a similar gameplay set-up (at least judging by the trailer). But it’s within a realm of possibility that they may have more distinct combat options. Both offer magic, melee, and the standard ranged options, but Eora has something that Tamriel doesn’t yet: firearms.<\/p>\n

Guns are absent in Skyrim<\/em> and all Elder Scrolls<\/em> games<\/a>, despite extensive Dwemer technology (and more) that makes it seem more than capable of existing. But from a logistical standpoint, it makes sense as a way to give Skyrim<\/em> a genuine high fantasy feel, as well as differentiate it from Fallout<\/em>. Either way, the similarities in gameplay between Bethesda’s two franchises make it to where that firearms could theoretically work, should Bethesda ever choose to introduce them, but it seems Avowed<\/em> may beat it to the punch.<\/p>\n

A lot is unknown about Avowed<\/a>,<\/em> but there’s plenty known about its setting, Eora. The firearms found within that setting are not too advanced, so players shouldn’t expect an epic shooter. However, blunderbusses, flintlock pistols, and aqruebuses do all exist in the game world. They aren’t as accurate as a bow and are very slow to reload, but they make up for it by dealing a ton of damage. Because they exist in Eora, they could too exist in Avowed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Notably, there’s nothing mentioning as to when\u00a0<\/em>Obsidian’s new RPG\u00a0takes place. Rumors paint a picture that Avowed<\/em> is bigger than Skyrim<\/em><\/a> and mostly takes place in The Living Lands, but to avoid mixing too much together, it could set the game well before the introduction of firearms. This would emphasize the older tales of the setting, as well as maintain that high fantasy-style identity.<\/p>\n

However, introducing firearms into Avowed<\/em> would further separate it from Skyrim<\/em> and wouldn’t necessarily feel out of place, if they were relegated to powerful yet expensive weapons. Middle fantasy, or even more modernized fantasy, can make as big an impact as high fantasy, so it’s really up to Obsidian Entertainment<\/a> and how it thinks the general playerbase would react to it. Taking down an actual dragon with a blunderbuss, though, sounds like something many would generally approve of.<\/p>\n

Avowed<\/em><\/strong> is in development for PC and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n
