Sony PlayStation<\/a> is continually innovating with its games, delivering a more immersive experience with almost every game release. A story can also add to immersion\u00a0as they absorb all of one’s attention. Some video game series are\u00a0easy to follow, but\u00a0others span several games or were confusing since day one.<\/p>\n

As a platform renowned for its story-driven exclusives, PlayStation has garnered a substantial library of games with lengthy, profound stories. Although some of us can follow their plots, many of us have issues wrapping our heads around these games. Take note of this Spoiler Alert<\/strong> for those who haven’t played these games. Here are ten PlayStation storylines that are impossible to follow.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

What began as a quaint story evolved into something impossible to follow. The original\u00a0Assassin’s Creed’s<\/em>\u00a0story involving Desmond Miles and the Animus, a device that allows Desmond to relive the life of Alta\u00efr Ibn-La’Ahad, was intriguing.<\/p>\n

After Assassin’s Creed II<\/em>, the series may have reached its climax. The new assassin Ezio Auditore<\/a> became the series’ most recognizable character. This series spans eleven main series games (twelve with\u00a0Assassin’s Creed Valhalla<\/a><\/em>), one movie, several short films, and a whopping seventeen spin-off games. Trying to connect\u00a0more recent Assassin’s Creed<\/em> games is next to impossible. However, we can still enjoy them for their independent stories and immersive gameplay.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>BioShock<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As a dormant series since 2014, we are hopefully approaching the release of\u00a0BioShock 4<\/em>.<\/a> Aside from a few job listings that revealed a new setting, most of\u00a0BioShock 4<\/em>\u00a0has been kept secret. Needless to say, another\u00a0BioShock<\/em>\u00a0sequel will make it more impossible to understand\u00a0the story.<\/p>\n

This critically-acclaimed series has a plot that involves time-travel, parallel universes, and doppelgangers.\u00a0BioShock<\/em>\u00a0does a good job of simplifying things with constants.<\/a> “There is always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city.” Past that, the series is difficult to comprehend, and things won’t get easier with\u00a0BioShock 4.<\/em><\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Metal Gear<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Metal Gear<\/em><\/a> franchise was a convoluted mess since day one. The idea to introduce five different Snakes (Naked, Solid, Venom,\u00a0Solidus, and Liquid Snake) with similar appearances creates confusion amongst players.<\/p>\n

Metal Gear Solid<\/em>\u00a0does few favors for those who want to understand the story and enjoy its gameplay. Some things need to be fixed with the series, and now that designer Hideo Kojima is no longer with Konami,<\/a> the series may not have a shot at redemption. Metal Gear Solid<\/em> is one of PlayStation’s most perplexing stories.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Final Fantasy<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a> is considered an anthology series; the stories are independent of one another. Nevertheless, we see characters who appear in multiple games<\/a> within and outside the series. According to\u00a0thegamer.com,<\/a>\u00a0figures\u00a0from Kingdom Hearts<\/em> “bump into characters like Cloud, Aerith, Cid, Squall, Tidus, Yuffie, Wakka, Selphie, and Sephiroth.”<\/p>\n

More recently, Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/em>‘s story is one of the most easily understood of the bunch. Since it’s a two-part story, however, the degree of perplexity is subject to change.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Castlevania<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There have been numerous Castlevania<\/em><\/a> games over the years, with\u00a0the majority of its plot coming from the written dialogue. The plot gets confusing because Dracula appears as both a protagonist and an antagonist throughout the series. This is one of the longest-running video game series in history. Trying to\u00a0dissect the plot of the Castlevania<\/em> games is not easy. You are better off trying to watch Netflix’s\u00a0Castlevania<\/em> series to understand what’s going on.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Dark Souls<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dark Souls’<\/em>\u00a0plot was convoluted since its inception. Progression through games is non-linear, meaning that you have to figure out where and when to head to the next location.<\/p>\n

It could be argued that Dark Souls\u00a0III<\/em>\u00a0is the least confusing of the bunch. The objective of returning the five Lords of Cinder to their rightful thrones to rekindle the flame at Firelink Shrine is clearly laid out. In the rubble, there is a loosely connected plot with reappearing characters<\/a> and locations. Good luck trying to figure out this impossible PlayStation story!<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Nioh<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The plots of Nioh<\/em> and Nioh 2<\/em><\/a> are interconnected despite featuring two different protagonists. The first game is about slaying an emerging threat of y\u014dkai, a supernatural demon found in Japenese folklore. The second changes the plot by making the protagonist a half-y\u014dkai who is hired to hunt y\u014dkai. His y\u014dkai powers go out of control, but they are calmed by a man who helps him. The characters are distantly based on real figures from Japanese history, but that doesn’t\u00a0make the story less confusing.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Resident Evil<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The eighth main series\u00a0Resident Evil<\/em>\u00a0game is\u00a0Resident Evil Village.<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>Capcom prefers to call it “Resident Evil Village<\/em>” instead of “Resident Evil 8<\/em>” to emphasize the “Village” part of the name.\u00a0Typically, when a game series runs past four or five games, it becomes a labyrinth of plot lines that are hard to\u00a0unravel.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard<\/em> was confirmation that the series is becoming less and less tied to the original story. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard<\/em> is canonical, but it has little to do with the Umbrella Corporation and the ongoing zombie outbreak. Perhaps Resident Evil Village<\/em> will reconnect with games like\u00a0Resident Evil 2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Resident Evil 4.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

2 <\/span>God Of War<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The God of War<\/em><\/a> series has become steadily more confusing ever since it shifted from Greek to Norse mythology. The series now crosses paths with both mythologies, and its newfound storyline added an abundance of characters and settings. It started as a battle against the original God of War until Kratos slew him and became the new God of War. Since then, the story\u00a0became about Kratos’s feelings of disdain towards his father, Zeus, and the gods.<\/p>\n

To make matters more perplexing,\u00a0God of War (2018)<\/em> hits you with an influx of information near its ending.<\/a> It turns out Kratos’s wife Laufey was a frost giant who gave birth to Atreus, who is also known as Loki. Players\u00a0need to replay this series to understand the story\u00a0fully.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Kingdom Hearts<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Kingdom Hearts<\/em> is Disney<\/a> meets Final Fantasy.<\/em> With children as its target demographic, the story is disconcerting. Aside from a few moments when you’ll have to ask that friend who seems to have every answer, the main series\u00a0is easily understood.<\/p>\n

We can credit\u00a0Tetsuya Nomura and his team of writers for coming up with possibly the most confusing storyline in video game history. Numerous spin-offs introduced more\u00a0Organization XIII characters, adding to the confusion. Counting Disney characters alone, there are more than thirty.<\/a>\u00a0Kingdom Hearts III <\/em>connects Disney films, spin-offs, main series games, and more. It’s no wonder why we are still trying to connect the dots.<\/p>\n
