Now, the athlete empowerment brand Uninterrupted has released a new sneak peek video that features LeBron James in the new Tune Squad uniforms for <em>Space Jam: A New Legacy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 1996 to box office success, <em>Space Jam<\/em>\u00a0followed Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes pals as they recruit retired <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/michael-jordan-documentary-last-dance-espn-ratings\/\">NBA player Michael Jordan<\/a> for a basketball game against the alien invaders known as the Monstars, who threatened to enslave the beloved cartoons as attractions at their theme park if they lose the match. While the Looney Tunes challenged the Monstars to a basketball game expecting to easily defeat the tiny weaklings\u00a0and secure their freedom, the extra-terrestrials transformed themselves into gargantuan beasts by stealing the talent of several well-known basketball players. The events of the film\u00a0were presented\u00a0as a fictionalized reason for Jordan&#8217;s return to basketball following his NBA retirement and stint with\u00a0<span id=\"First_retirement_and_stint_in_Minor_League_Baseball_(1993\u20131994)\" class=\"mw-headline\">Minor League Baseball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-looney-tunes-short\/\">Pokemon Releasing Looney Tunes-Style Animated Shorts<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In <em>Space Jam: A New Legacy<\/em>,\u00a0LeBron James of the\u00a0Los Angeles Lakers will <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/space-jam-2-a-new-legacy\/\">play a fictional version of himself<\/a> in a similar role to that of Jordan&#8217;s in the original film. James, whose previous acting credits include\u00a0<i>Trainwreck<\/i>, will star opposite\u00a0Sonequa Martin-Green\u00a0as Savannah James and Don Cheadle in an undisclosed role. As with the original film, <em>Space Jam 2<\/em> will feature cameo appearances by real-world basketball players, including\u00a0Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis,\u00a0Damian Lillard,\u00a0Chris Paul, Kyle Kuzma,\u00a0Diana Taurasi,\u00a0Nneka Ogwumike, and\u00a0Chiney Ogwumike.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/uninterrupted\/status\/1295529003747442688\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Attempts to produce a <em>Space Jam<\/em> sequel started as early as 1997, but the initial plan was canceled by Warner Bros. after <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/space-jam-2-movie-sequel-michael-jordan-not-return-reason\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Jordan decided against returning<\/a>. Alternative ideas\u00a0for a sequel were set aside in favor of a follow-up film titled\u00a0<i>Looney Tunes: Back in Action\u00a0<\/i>with Brendan Fraser and Jenna Elfman starring opposite the Looney Tunes. However, <em>Back in Action<\/em> bombed at the box office upon its 2003 release and consequently killed any chances for a<em> Space Jam<\/em> sequel until the LeBron James film was first announced in 2014.\u00a0Over the course of the <em>Space Jam<\/em> sequel&#8217;s development with LeBron James attached, directors Justin Lin and Terence Nance\u00a0signed and dropped out on separate occasions before production finally started with\u00a0Malcolm D. Lee helming the project from a script co-written by <em>Black Panther<\/em> director Ryan Coogler, who also serves as producer.<\/p>\n<p>While a generation of Looney Tunes fans, particularly those who grew up in the &#8217;90s, hold <em>Space Jam<\/em> in high regard, critics were harsher on the film when it debuted in theaters. Consequently, feelings towards the upcoming sequel range from excitement to apathy.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the Looney Tunes continue to amuse fans as they wait for the <em>Space Jam<\/em> sequel with the recent release of a new series of animated shorts exclusive to HBO Max.
