The development team is currently working on <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-dlc-1-ancient-gods-trailer\/\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em>&#8216;s first story DLC, <em>The Ancient Gods<\/em><\/a>, which will be officially unveiled during Gamescom on August 27. Before then, a new free update to the game has\u00a0brought in additional render modes\u00a0for fans\u00a0to take\u00a0some impressive screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>Different render modes allow players to go through an adventure with interesting\u00a0perspectives, such as Sucker Punch Productions&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-tsushima-best-star-wars-games-2020-kurosawa-mode\/\"><em>Ghost of Tsushima<\/em> having a &#8220;Kurosawa Mode&#8221;<\/a> that turns the game into a classic black-and-white samurai film. <em>Doom Eternal<\/em>\u00a0now has\u00a0eight visual options, according to a trailer released today: retro handheld, black and white, VHS, dots, classic, retro console, cinematic, and gritty.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-alligator-resident-evil-2\/\">Doom Eternal Easter Egg Might be Resident Evil 2 Reference<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A few of these options; black and white,\u00a0gritty, cinematic, and classic; were available when <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-update-2-torment-map\/\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em> Update 2 added a new multiplayer map<\/a> and more in June. Retro handheld mode is perhaps the most striking new style for <em>Doom Eternal<\/em>, as it renders the game in varying shades of green like the original Game Boy, diametrically opposing its typically\u00a0red-heavy world. Dots mode also stands out for making the game look like\u00a0a pop art comic book.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iL6ItOlrBdg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The latest id Software hit has seen\u00a0a rocky history with updates and additions, from fairly well-received new cosmetic options and battle pass unlockables\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/doom-eternal-review-bomb-denuvo-anticheat-system-bad\/\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em> being review bombed<\/a>\u00a0after implementing Denuvo anti-cheat software that many consider too invasive. That controversial change was ultimately reversed following its severe backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Where these new render modes may stand out best is on next-generation consoles. Bethesda confirmed earlier this month that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/doom-eternal-eso-ps5-xsx-upgrades\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em> and <em>Elder Scrolls Online<\/em> will have free next-gen upgrades<\/a>, and it&#8217;s hard to imagine a hyper-stylized look like retro handheld will be anything other than stunning with updated graphical capabilities on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its missteps, <em>Doom Eternal<\/em> has been one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-games-of-2020-top-rated\/\">highest-rated games of 2020<\/a>\u00a0based on review\u00a0scores from the aggregate site OpenCritic.
