Much like\u00a0Skyrim\u00a0<\/em>before it, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em><\/strong> is a title that has received a second wind thanks to the support of its modding community. The boundless creativity of the collective internet often leads to outlandish crossovers, however.<\/p>\n

The Witcher 3<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in the spring of 2015 and has gone on to become one of the most decorated titles of the outgoing console generation. In fact, Geralt’s third adventure holds up remarkably well in 2020, though some fans, having\u00a0exhausted every standard encounter on offer in\u00a0Wild Hunt<\/em> and its expansions, are turning\u00a0to modding to breathe fresh life into the title. Most of these additions make subtle graphical tweaks, or impose extra challenges on Geralt, but sometimes, the results\u00a0are a little odder.<\/p>\n

Case in point: Modder Hackeraxe has created a patch for The Witcher 3<\/em> that allows Geralt of Rivia to step into the sleek, high-tech armor of Overwatch’s<\/em> cyborg ninja, Genji Shimada. The mod doesn’t change Geralt’s character model outright, but rather imports several pieces of armor that will combine to make the\u00a0White Wolf\u00a0look like the Overwatch<\/em>\u00a0hero. But it is best not to mix and match Northern Realms garb with the\u00a0robotic ninja gear, even in the pursuit of new heights of Witcher fashion<\/a>. Hackeraxe cautions that “Geralt’s limbs start falling off” unless you wear the full set.<\/p>\n

Genji isn’t the only striking character to visit the world of\u00a0The Witcher,<\/em> however. Thanks to modders, players can be\u00a0Guts, from the grimdark manga\u00a0Berserk,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>in The Witcher 3<\/em><\/a>, as well.\u00a0Given their shared calling of monster hunting, Guts may seem to make a little more sense in Geralt’s world. But there is a way\u00a0the high tech\u00a0armor’s presence could be explained.<\/p>\n

When Ciri relays her story to Geralt, she describes an\u00a0world that sounds an awful lot like Night City, the setting of developer CD Projekt Red’s forthcoming title, Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>. And given that Geralt’s sword\u00a0is referenced in Cyberpunk 2077<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>it seems plausible that some kind of transference is possible. Admittedly, Overwatch<\/em> and Cyberpunk<\/em> are two very different visions of the future, but maybe\u00a0Ciri was one lucky\u00a0portal away from finding\u00a0herself facing down Talon agents.<\/p>\n

It is probably healthiest not to try rationalizing the implications of every outlandish mod, however. Trying to parse Thomas the Tank Engine’s presence in\u00a0Sekiro,\u00a0<\/em>Skyrim<\/em>, and\u00a0Fallout 4<\/em><\/a>\u00a0seems like a nightmarish line of inquiry.<\/p>\n

Regardless of how gamers feel about Genji’s\u00a0armor appearing in The Witcher 3<\/em>, the patch represents the tremendous promise of the modding community. Even though it is now nearly a decade old, Skyrim\u00a0<\/em>can be breathtaking when heavily modded<\/a>, and it is exciting to think about what T<\/em>he Witcher 3<\/em> could look like in another five years.<\/p>\n

The Witcher 3:\u00a0Wild Hunt<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n
