Last week, 505 Games announced an Ultimate Edition for the popular game Control<\/em><\/strong>. As expected, the Ultimate Edition bundles the base game with both expansions<\/a> including a few extra bonuses. The real kicker here is that purchasing the bundle also gets players a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles once they launch. Unfortunately, it also means that players who have already purchased the game and expansions are being left behind.<\/p>\n

After an initial wave of excitement, fans began to sour on the Control<\/em><\/a> news due to the fact that it meant they’d have to purchase the game again on next-gen consoles. This seemingly went against what other companies were doing with their cross-generation games, offering a free upgrade path to current gen owners or Microsoft’s own Smart Delivery system which lets players continue playing existing games from the Xbox One to the Xbox Series X with added enhancements.<\/p>\n

After a week of silence, publisher 505 Games attempted to explain the decision making process behind this move. While the publisher acknowledges those who feel like the decision is unfair, the post goes on to admit that no decision was taken lightly and that each avenue it pursued had some sort of blocker that would isolate some faction of players. It concludes with an apology to players and the fact that the company couldn’t meet everyone’s expectations.<\/p>\n

The post also attempts to clarify a few points with the new version of the game. For next gen owners, only Control Ultimate Edition<\/em> will be available for purchase<\/a>, though the base game and expansions will continue to be available through backward compatibility for those who have already purchased the 2019 game. It’s worth noting that the upgrade path is only available on the same version of the game, so if players purchase the Ultimate Edition for Xbox One, they’ll only have access to the Xbox Series X version.<\/p>\n

Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can\u2019t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand that is not what you want to hear.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ultimately, the post doesn’t shed any new light on the situation and likely won’t satisfy those who feel disappointed in the decision. For now, Remedy isn’t done keeping the game updated with things to do. With one expansion already released and the next due out in a week, another free update is coming this month which enhances the game with new accessibility options<\/a>. The often criticized checkpoint system is getting a much needed tweak as well as a new Assist Mode, a series of settings that can be toggled on to modify portions of the game. This includes how much damage Jesse deals, takes, reloads, and much more. Through Assist Mode, players can fine tune the experience to how they want.<\/p>\n

Control: Ultimate Edition<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0launches on August 27 for Steam, and will be available for Epic Games Store, PS4, and Xbox One on September 10. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are also in development.<\/p>\n
