Dormant franchises are abundant, and especially when it comes to\u00a0Nintendo.<\/a> Nintendo is one of the oldest gaming companies around. We at least can cross\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon Snap<\/em>\u00a0off our list now that\u00a0New Pok\u00e9mon Snap<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is coming soon.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0New Pok\u00e9mon Snap<\/em>‘s announcement really\u00a0outlined how much potential\u00a0the Nintendo Switch has\u00a0when it comes to\u00a0reviving a whole host of fantastic and long-forgotten franchises. The Nintendo Switch only released in 2017, so Nintendo has time to get to work. Nintendo fanboys (and fangirls) are growing weary of ignored franchises, finding themselves eagerly anticipating their old favorites getting a fresh coat of paint. Here are ten dormant franchises that deserve the reboot treatment.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Metroid<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This section refers to the original\u00a0Metroid<\/em><\/a>\u00a0series and not\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em>. That’s not to say that\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em>\u00a0isn’t a phenomenal franchise, but Metroid<\/em> does offer something unique as a 2D platformer. Its intricate level design and boss battles\u00a0are awe-inspiring.<\/p>\n

Metroid<\/em>\u00a0received numerous 2D sequels, but the franchise has been dormant since Metroid’s enhanced remake, Metroid: Samus Returns (<\/em>remake of\u00a0Metroid II: Return of Samus)<\/em>. It’s time to either release the remake of Super Metroid<\/em> or release another sequel.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Banjo-Kazooie<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Xbox Games Studios is an industry leader\u00a0concerning mergers and acquisitions. They have purchased numerous gaming companies, while companies like Nintendo have acquired companies to a lesser extent. Many of the Nintendo Switch’s best games are first-party exclusives.<\/p>\n

Banjo-Kazooie<\/em> is an intellectual property of the Rare development company,<\/a> which is owned by Xbox. Despite appearing in Diddy Kong Racing<\/em> first, Banjo may never return to Nintendo. Whether it’s Nintendo or Xbox, this dormant franchise needs to return, though seeing it return to Nintendo in proper fashion would be a landmark moment.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Donkey Kong 64<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Donkey Kong 64<\/em> earned critical acclaim when it released in 1999.<\/a> This game was bundled with jungle-themed Nintendo 64 consoles. Utilizing an Expansion Pak, which boosted the video game console’s RAM, the game offered breathtaking graphics.<\/p>\n

Because Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze<\/em> and other Donkey Kong<\/em> 2D platformers are so successful, Nintendo may not want to release a 3D game. Nintendo rarely releases similarly themed games concurrently. Nevertheless, there is plenty of pent-up demand for a\u00a0 proper\u00a0Donkey Kong 64<\/em> sequel.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>F-Zero<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Set in the surreal future, F-Zero<\/em><\/a> was one of Nintendo’s most prominent franchises. Did you know that Captain Falcon was once the intended mascot of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System?<\/a> This series spawned several hits and is renowned for hyperspeed races. What happened to the F-Zero<\/em> franchise? Ever since F-Zero Climax<\/em> in 2004, this has been a dormant Nintendo franchise.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Diddy Kong Racing<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This racing series is renowned for its unforgiving races. Although not quite as punishing as rival Crash Team Racing<\/em>,\u00a0Diddy Kong Racing<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>had races more competitive than kart racing series like Mario Kart<\/em>.<\/a> The items did not change based on your race position, and it required genuine skill to win races.<\/p>\n

Diddy Kong Racing<\/em>\u00a0is next up for a reboot.<\/a> It is credited for introducing prominent Nintendo characters like Banjo and Conker. This racing series is relevant in the Nintendo racing world for having a competitive multiplayer and an intriguing single-player campaign.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Mario Kart<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although Mario Kart<\/em><\/a> could be considered an active series, it’s been more than six years since the last Mario Kart<\/em> game released, excluding Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>. This is a game series that likely won’t\u00a0release another game until 2021. Mario Kart: Double Dash<\/em> was inventive,<\/a> bringing two players racing on a single cart. Mario Kart 9<\/em> should attempt to reinvent itself, but still contain everything we love about the series.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Super Mario Strikers<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

One of the newer dormant franchises which is long overdue for a reboot is\u00a0Super\u00a0Mario Strikers<\/em>. For the first time ever, Mario and friends (and enemies) band together to play competitive soccer games. This Nintendo GameCube game received a sequel for the Nintendo Wii,<\/a> but it’s been dormant since then. Mario Tennis Aces<\/em> released for the Nintendo Switch, but we haven’t seen soccer make its long-awaited return. This is a game series that works well online. It’s relevant and deserves to return.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Super Mario RPG<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Paper Mario<\/em> is steadily becoming less of a role-playing\u00a0series since its inception on the Nintendo 64. The first game was a full-on role-playing game with turn-based battles and a leveling system.\u00a0Paper Mario: Color Splash<\/em>\u00a0was more of an action-adventure than a role-playing game, and Paper Mario: The Origami King<\/em><\/a> is classified as a cross-genre video game.<\/p>\n

Although Nintendo’s direction with Paper Mario<\/em> isn’t entirely\u00a0misguided, it leaves an empty place in our hearts for a Mario<\/em> role-playing game. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars<\/em><\/a>\u00a0released more than twenty years ago, but a sequel could still happen.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Earthbound<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This retro game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. Earthbound<\/em><\/a> was created by HAL Laboratory, the developer behind games like the original Super Smash Bros. <\/em>and Kirby Star Allies.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Despite having lackluster sales figures, the game maintained a cult following. People today rate it as one of the greatest games of all time. There is a depth of artistry in this game that’s rarely seen in the industry at large, even today.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Star Fox<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Star Fox<\/em><\/a> series was the pinnacle of aerial combat when it was an active franchise. For reasons that are unclear, the series has remained a dormant franchise. Even the spin-off game Star Fox Adventures<\/em> was a hit. The latest from the Star Fox<\/em> series is Starlink: Battle for Atlas<\/em>; a game that won’t satisfy fans of the main series. Although\u00a0Starlink: Battle for Atlas<\/em> is not completely terrible, it isn’t the triple-A game fans deserve.<\/p>\n
