Those who want to\u00a0experience the 2001 first-person shooter that started it all, or those who want to relive its\u00a0crazy alien-killing antics before this new entry releases, can pick up <strong><em>Serious Sam: The First Encounter<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on GOG for free until August 26 at 6:00 a.m. PT.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0digital storefront\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/gog-galaxy-epic-games-support\/\">GOG is integrated with the\u00a0Epic Games Store<\/a>, Steam,\u00a0and multiple other distribution platforms, and much like those platforms it\u00a0occasionally hosts massive sales for a variety of games. The free <em>Serious Sam<\/em> giveaway is part of GOG&#8217;s Harvest Sale running through August 31, which includes deals on over 1,500 titles\u00a0including indies like <em>My Friend Pedro<\/em>, blockbuster RPGs like <em>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/devolver-direct-2020-recap\/\">Devolver Direct 2020 Recap<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/serious-sam-4-gameplay-trailer\/\"><em>Serious Sam 4<\/em> was\u00a0part\u00a0of publisher Devolver Digital&#8217;s showcase<\/a>\u00a0in July alongside titles like <em>Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout<\/em>, <em>Shadow Warrior 3<\/em>, and <em>Carrion<\/em>. The anticipated continuation of this classic franchise is a prequel to 2011&#8217;s <em>Serious Sam 3: BFE<\/em>, which itself was a prequel to <em>Serious Sam: The First Encounter<\/em>. It&#8217;s hard to recommend the original as a way to prepare for <em>Serious Sam 4\u00a0<\/em>given these timeline shenanigans, but playing it may\u00a0offer an interesting perspective on how things have evolved in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOGcom\/status\/1297882578364637185?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>GOG is not the only place where players can get their hands on <em>Serious Sam<\/em>&#8216;s first few titles leading up to the release of <em>Serious Sam 4<\/em> in September.
