Games on the NES and SNES never shied away from embracing challenge, to the point where most games were designed with the explicit purpose of being difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-zelda-twilight-princess-most-hilarious-memes\/\">The Legend Of Zelda: 10 Twilight Princess Memes That Are Too Funny<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a time where the average <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game offered quite a challenge, but that seemed to change after the franchise transitioned into 3D. As <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/legend-of-zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has only gotten easier with time, certain games have included hard modes to recapture the early days of Nintendo\u2019s brutality. Not every game in the series humors the occasional Hero and Master Mode, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is better off when it actually challenges its audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>The Legend Of Zelda<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Zelda-NES.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiously, the first game in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series to feature a hard mode predates the actual need for one. The original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the NES is plenty difficult as is, but the 2nd Quest is a beast in and of itself. Not only are all the dungeons remixed, Hyrule layout has been slightly altered\u2013 secrets now amiss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd Quest is a true challenge of one\u2019s mastery over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forcing players to think as outside of the box as humanly possible. Unlike the NES original, 2nd Quest does fallback on a number of obtuse puzzles which can make getting through the game without a guide extremely frustrating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Ocarina Of Time<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ocarina-of-time-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took a long time for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get its hard mode, but it eventually came through the form of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Developed for the Nintendo 64DD and originally released for the Nintendo GameCube, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remade every single dungeon in the game with harder action set pieces and more complex puzzles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dungeons themselves are debatably worse than the base game\u2019s, but they\u2019re not bad and do offer a genuine challenge. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was included in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as an unlockable where enemies now deal double damage. Complete with a flipped map, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the definitive way of experiencing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s hard mode.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Skyward Sword<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/skyward-sword-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s reputation with fans isn\u2019t exactly stellar, but it\u2019s a good game that did something very unique for 3D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Beyond the use of motion controls, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is actually challenging. The base game even begins with Link with six Hearts so players can adapt to the more demanding gameplay loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-game-storylines-confusing\/\">10 Nintendo Storylines That Are Impossible To Follow<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon completing the game once, players unlock Hero Mode. Not only do enemies deal far more damage, they no longer drop Hearts. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a true test of your mastery of the game\u2019s combat. For those who enjoy the title\u2019s motion controls, it\u2019s an excellent way of revisiting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>The Wind Waker HD<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Wind-Waker-Differences-Heros-Charm-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker HD <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has its issues as a remake, but it has far and away the best implementation of Hero Mode in the franchise. It doesn\u2019t need to be unlocked, it rebalances the game without reorienting the map, and it can actually be toggled on &amp; off. The fact no other Hero Mode operates this way is criminal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering how easy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is, Hero Mode really helps in rebalancing the combat. Enemies deal enough damage to actually be threatening now and the lack of dropped hearts means that players either need to fight well or stock up on potions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>A Link Between Worlds<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/maxresdefault-2-61.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link Between Worlds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 Hero Mode is only unlocked after completing the game once. It\u2019s better the game have it than the game not having it at all, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker HD <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had set a precedent by this point and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link Between Worlds <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arguably needed its Hero Mode available from the get go considering how easy the overall difficulty curve is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a successor to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link Between Worlds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 difficulty is its only real setback. Thankfully, Hero Mode offers a playthrough even harder than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that really allows the game\u2019s non-linearity to shine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Twilight Princess HD<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/4-Zelda-Twilight-Princess-Ganondorf.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess HD <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s interchangeable Hero Mode, but it does have a good excuse: Hero Mode mirrors the map to emulate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wii release. While some might find it disappointing that Hero Mode now mirrors the map, there is a way to actually trigger an alternative hard mode for normal mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-game-each-zelda-character-based-on\/\">Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Every Game Each Zelda Character Is Based On<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using the Ganondorf Amiibo, Link will take double damage for the rest of the play session. Players do need to tap in Ganondorf every time they boot up the game, but it frankly just makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a more rewarding experience. Pairing Ganondorf with Mirror mode might very well make <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TP <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the hardest 3D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Breath Of The Wild<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-2020-08-21T144751.500.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath of the Wild<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unfortunately didn\u2019t launch with a hard mode, but Master Mode was released later on as DLC. Unlike Hero Mode, Master Mode is a bit more hands on as a hard mode. Every single enemy has been upgraded a tier\u2013 making the game harder from the get go\u2013 while they all regenerate health now, bosses included. This makes battles a war of attrition where durability can severely hinder a player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath of the Wild<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Master Mode will only appeal to fans who have mastered the game\u2019s combat as its oppressive difficulty can shine an uncomfortable light on durability\u2019s mechanical drawbacks. Master Mode often feels punishing for the wrong reasons, but the tension added to moment to moment gameplay is undeniably a boon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Link\u2019s Awakening (2019)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/nintendo-switch-best-metacritic-exclusives-links-awakening-7.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remakes have been hit or miss, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2019) recaptures that same frenzy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did for its source game. Both are fantastic reimaginings of wonderful games and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2019) arguably improves upon the original on every mechanical level. Beyond that, the addition of a hard mode out the gate was a step in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2019) might be the singlest hardest 2D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all things considered. Its Hero Mode makes getting through the early game in one piece a massive challenge.
