People love to make characters. For some, making a character is one of the most fun parts of a game. It is like playing dress-up except you can change your skin, hair, eyes, ears, and nose like a shapeshifter.<\/p>\n

The most common games to have character customization is role-playing games. This is because customizing a character is all part of the fun of role-playing. You get to decide their gender, race, height, and so much more before being thrown into an adventure.<\/p>\n

So here are ten RPGs we think have some impressive character customization options.<\/p>\n

It’s an extra element game designers can throw in just to make the experience that much more personal for the players. There’s always something satisfying about tailor-making a character to fit one’s strengths and preferences, whether that be in appearance, weapons, or playstyle. Luckily, the gaming industry seems to be picking up on what the people want, and now players have more than a few new unique experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n

15 <\/span>3D Dot Game Heroes<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It might look like a\u00a0Zelda-like<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>with fully-rendered chunky pixels, but there’s a little bit more to it than just that. This game from the makers of the\u00a0Souls\u00a0<\/em>series allows players to either play as a number of fully rendered hero characters with their own class styles or go into a builder and make their own.<\/p>\n

Simply put, if they can dream it, they can do it. Fans of Lego or\u00a0Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>will have an absolute ball in designing their own blocky characters and their animations. It’s an acquired skill, but one that’s surprisingly satisfying.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Warframe<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Don’t let the free-to-play sticker deceive,\u00a0Warframe\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most entertaining and satisfying action titles currently available. Though it might take some serious grinding to get new Warframes and weapons, the amount of customization available for this ARPG is actually quite remarkable. It’s all a matter of playstyle preference.<\/p>\n

Is it better to be a sci-fi ninja with a deadly blade, a cunning archer, or an acrobatic combination of classes? The combat is both satisfying and flexible, and the visuals and choices are more than enough to tide even the pickiest of players over for a solid while. And that’s not even mentioning the custom paint-jobs available either.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Diablo III<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0Diablo\u00a0<\/em>series might not offer much in terms of physical customization, but as for cosmetics, weapons, and playstyles, no game does that better than the most recent entry in the saga,\u00a0Diablo III.\u00a0<\/em>The game has seven different characters to choose from, along with a multitude of armors, weapons, upgrades, trinkets, enchantments, colors, shapes, sizes, and troves and troves of loot to help further invest in the player’s character of choice.<\/p>\n

Definitely one of the most treasure-heavy games out there, if a player is unsatisfied with their build, all it takes is a little grinding and clever thinking to get the monster-slaying machine of their dreams.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When it comes to playstyle and classes,\u00a0Kingdoms of Amalur\u00a0<\/em>unquestionably is the most flexible. Thanks to a gimmick relating to the shifting fate of the protagonist character, players can swap classes, weapons, and playstyles as quickly as they please. Not only can players design their character’s physical appearance, but just about every way that makes them tick imaginable<\/p>\n

A player might start as a simple sword-swinging warrior, but because their fate is completely up to them, they can easily go from fighter to battlemage with the right amount of skills and weapons. Weapons, armor, and perks are not bound by classes, so the playstyle is as fluid as the player desires.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Dragon’s Dogma<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dragon’s Dogma\u00a0<\/em>might rely on several traditional high fantasy tropes, such as the standard warrior, rogue, and mage classes for example, but if there’s one thing it was ahead of its time on, it was the character customization. The game allowed not only the customization of the player’s character but their own personal pawn sidekick as well.<\/p>\n

The imagination is the limit when it comes to customization in\u00a0Dragon’s Dogma<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>In fact, this amount of attention to physical detail wouldn’t truly be seen until the later\u00a0Souls\u00a0<\/em>games. That being said, it’s still all kinds of impressive to see what the game could do.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Fallout 4<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Fallout 4<\/em> has a character creator that fans have used to make celebrities, cartoon characters, and more. It has been the star of popular Youtube series such as Monster Factory <\/em>where players try to make the ugliest character possible.<\/p>\n

Not only can you choose the typical hair, eyes, race, and size of the character but you can also add wounds that they would get in a nuclear wasteland environment such as burns, scars, and more. They also included little details such as skin blemishes, because we know that no one really has perfect skin in the post-apocalypse. Also you get to decide how both you and your life partner look and that influences how your baby looks.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Final Fantasy XIV<\/h2>\n

Among role-playing games with character creation is a lot of massive multiplayer games. Character creation in these games feels even more involved, since your character is going to walk among a land where a lot of other real people are going to see them.<\/p>\n

Final Fantasy XIV<\/em> has a ton of interesting races and each with their own sub-race as well. It is a dream come true for anyone who wanted to make an original Final Fantasy<\/em> styled character. As you play the game, you can also have makeovers so you can change some of your character’s physical appearance anytime.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Monster Hunter World<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Monster Hunter World<\/em>, like Fallout 4,<\/em> as been a place where fans can get very creative and make celebrity look-a-likes and cartoon characters. It allows you to break gender norms with men wearing make-up and being allowed to have pigtails if they want them.<\/p>\n

What sets Monster Hunter World<\/em> apart from the other games on this list is that you actually get to also customize a cat sidekick, the palico. A lot of players have made their palico’s look like their own cats. That is just sweet.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Bloodborne<\/h2>\n

Dark Souls<\/em> and its sequel were incredibly popular, but it was not due to their character creator. Fans despised the character creators for Dark Souls<\/em> and Dark Souls 2<\/em>. So when Bloodborne came out, fans were pleasantly surprised with the improvements made on character creation. Some players have noted that while the character creator has a lot of options, it can be difficult to use. It often takes about an hour for players to get the character they want just right.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Aion<\/h2>\n

Aion<\/em> has a pretty mind-blowing character creation system. Like Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>, it is an MMO. It is Korean and was released in North America and Europe in 2010.<\/p>\n

A major sign in an MMO about the quality of its character creation is whether you find other player characters that look very much like your character. If you find doppelgangers, then its likely that the character creation is not so good and does not offer a lot of options. For Aion<\/em>, there are so many choices for your character that the chances finding a look-a-like character is slim to none.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Skyrim<\/h2>\n

The story of Skyrim’s<\/em> character customization is much like Bloodborne<\/em> in that it was a major advancement compared to its predecessor. Today, Elder Scroll fans laugh and joke at Oblivion’s<\/em> character creator, as all the people look like potatoes compared to the characters of Skyrim<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The fantasy races and their sub races are all there and they let you control everything from fur color, scales, make-up, gender, face-paint, face structure, and more. Many fans consider it good but they make it even better through fan-made mods. With the mods, any look is possible.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>White Knight Chronicles<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

White Knight Chronicles<\/em> has gone down in gaming history as a pretty game with weak characters and writing that is full of cliches. However, we still have to admit that the game was pretty. A very strange aspect of the game was that you created a character in the beginning whose main purpose was for multiplayer content. However, they also were the main protagonists best friend in the single-player part of the game. So they followed the main plot as a silent friend for the whole game. Pretty unique.<\/p>\n

The character creation is great, and that is part of why fans did not like the game. They got very attached to the characters they made, but they were not the main character.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Jump Force<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Jump Force<\/em> is an anime fans dream game. It is a fighting game with tons of recognizable anime characters from titles like Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, Naruto, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hunter X Hunter, Bleach,<\/em> and so much more.<\/p>\n

While that alone sounds great, the character creation is also amazing. You can create your own character that looks like they come from a manga. You can do weird mash-ups and create a Vegeta-Naruto Frankenstein or make an original character that looks like they came straight out of Shonen Jump<\/em>.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Dragon Age Inquisition<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dragon Age<\/em> has gone nowhere but up in terms of advancing their character customization in their games. Inquisition<\/em> brought back the fantasy races and even added qunari among them. Based on which race you choose, you get different options for face-paint, hair, and tattoos. That is the magic of Dragon Age<\/em>, as the lore is mixed into the creation of your character. For example, only elves can have vallaslin.<\/p>\n

Also the female dwarves can have beards!<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Black Desert Online<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Black Dessert<\/em> is yet another fantasy MMO game, and it is famous for the level of freedom that is in its character creation. Kotaku <\/a>has called the character creation portion of the game an “epic undertaking” due to the amount of choices you get from everything about the eyes and the hair to the colors of every little strand of hair and inch of skin.<\/p>\n

It is easy to make a gorgeous character or a complete monster with a blue nose, green lips, and pink beard.<\/p>\n
