Game Freak’s\u00a0Nintendo Switch titles\u00a0Pokemon Sword<\/strong><\/em> and Shield<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0have been historic for a number of reasons. They are the first mainline Pokemon<\/em>\u00a0games\u00a0to be released on a non-handheld console, and they are the first\u00a0games in the series to offer new story through post-launch DLC.\u00a0These are just a few of the reasons why Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em> recently hit an impressive sales milestone<\/a>, shipping 18.22 million units to become the third best-selling Pokemon<\/em>\u00a0games ever. However, they have also been infamous entries in the series thanks to a number of controversies prior to release.<\/p>\n

Arguably\u00a0the biggest controversy was “Dexit,” in which fans bristled against the idea that not every monster in the National Pokedex would be accessible. Game Freak has mitigated this concern by reintroducing Pokemon in the Isle of Armor DLC<\/a>, with more planned for\u00a0the upcoming\u00a0Crown Tundra expansion. Yet, another concern\u00a0not addressed in Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em> is the removal of Mega Evolutions \u2014 a fan-favorite mechanic from\u00a0Pokemon X<\/em> and Y<\/em> that allowed certain Pokemon to temporarily change form and gain power. Its removal becomes stranger\u00a0in hindsight, given Mega Evolution is continuing to appear in spin-off titles like Pokemon GO<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This new mechanic for the\u00a0AR mobile game was announced during the Pokemon Presents stream in June, but developer Niantic has not talked extensively about what it will entail.\u00a0More concrete information about Pokemon GO<\/em>‘s Mega Evolution has been leaked by dataminers<\/a>, such as Pokemon requiring a certain amount of “Mega Energy” based on their friendship level with trainers to activate an evolution that lasts two hours. There will also purportedly be events surrounding Mega Evolution, such as Special Research Tasks and Raid battles to collect Mega Energy.<\/p>\n

While the potential mechanics surrounding Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO<\/em> will be specific to that\u00a0game’s unique systems, the excitement stoked by\u00a0its\u00a0inclusion overall is indicative of how it would look if Megas were added into Sword<\/em><\/a> and Shield<\/em><\/a>. The special forms being removed in those titles has been\u00a0an exception for Generation 8, not the rule. Mega Evolutions have appeared in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX<\/em>, the remake of a\u00a0title released before Pokemon X<\/em> and Y;<\/em>\u00a0and trainers with Mega-capable partners continue to be released in DeNA’s mobile game Pokemon Masters<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A major focus of Pokemon Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em> is the spectacle of battling, with a Pokemon League themed after professional sports with stadiums that facilitate crazy Gigantamax Pokemon<\/a>. Adding Mega Evolutions as powerful forms for monsters that (mostly) do not have Gigantamax forms could fit well into this theming through\u00a0David and Goliath-type encounters. However, it could be argued that\u00a0Mega Evolutions were removed initially because they\u00a0might\u00a0break Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em>‘s competitive scene, given\u00a0their power came to define battles in Generations 6 and 7.<\/p>\n

There’s an easy answer to this problem: Split up which official competitive events would allow for Mega Evolutions and Gigantamax forms to be used.\u00a0Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard would have both Megas and Gigantamax forms, but this could be governed at a mechanical level by making it so anything holding a Mega Stone cannot also utilize Dynamax Power Spots. As unlikely as it seems for Game Freak to add Mega\u00a0Pokemon back in, the Isle of Armor DLC did re-introduce smaller mechanics like resetting a\u00a0Pokemon’s EV stats, so it is within the realm of possibility. Even if it does not happen, Pokemon<\/em> developers have asked for fan input on future games<\/a>, so\u00a0Mega Evolution could still make a comeback outside spin-offs like Pokemon GO<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Pokemon Sword<\/strong><\/em> and Shield<\/strong><\/em> are available now on Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
