The Academy Award-nominated song “The Bare\u00a0Necessities” has been one of the most enduring Disney<\/strong><\/a> tunes ever since it debuted in 1967’s The Jungle Book<\/em>. Now, Radio Times readers have named\u00a0it as the most uplifting\u00a0song in Disney’s library of tunes.<\/p>\n

The survey, which polled over 11,000 fans, asked\u00a0readers to vote for the top three\u00a0songs from the Disney+ film catalog that made them happiest. The classic Jungle Book<\/em> tune took the top spot with\u00a040% of the vote followed by\u00a0Randy Newman’s “You\u2019ve Got A Friend In Me” from Pixar’s Toy Story<\/em> and “Hakuna Matata” from Disney’s The Lion King<\/em><\/a>, both of which earned 29% of the vote from readers.\u00a0However,\u00a0The Jungle Book<\/em>\u00a0song didn’t even make the top 3 among\u00a016 to 24-year-old voters. Among that demographic, “Hakuna Matata” earned the top spot followed by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “You’re Welcome” and “How Far I’d Go” from Disney’s\u00a0Moana<\/em>.<\/p>\n

“The Bare\u00a0Necessities”\u00a0did, however, receive more support from\u00a0Scotland than any other area in the UK with 45% of the Scottish vote.\u00a0“Brilliant films and their soundtracks have the ability to stay with us throughout our lives \u2013 they make us smile and they make us cry, and can transport us back to times and places we remember fondly,” said Radio Times Editorial Director Tim Glanfield of the song’s success in the survey. “So it\u2019s no surprise to see that Disney classics both old and new<\/a> mean so much to the British public, and iconic songs like The Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book<\/em> continue to cheer up the nation over half a century after they were first released.”<\/p>\n

Written by\u00a0Terry Gilkyson for an earlier draft of Disney’s animated adaptation of\u00a0Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book<\/em>, “The Bare Necessities” was the only song carried over to the newer draft featuring\u00a0tunes\u00a0written by\u00a0Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman. Sung by\u00a0Phil Harris as Baloo and Bruce Reitherman as Mowgli, with a reprise by Harris and Sebastian Cabot as Bagheera at the end, the song would ultimately lose the Best Original Song Oscar to “Talk to the Animals”\u00a0from\u00a0Doctor Dolittle<\/i>. Notable artists to cover “The Bare Necessities” include Louis Armstrong, Lou Rawls for the animates series Jungle Cubs<\/em>, and\u00a0Bill Murray for Disney’s live-action\/CG remake<\/a> of the film.<\/p>\n

The success of the song among those surveyed is hardly surprising considering\u00a0the popularity of The\u00a0Jungle Book<\/em>. Although released in the late ’60s, the property proved to be popular enough for modern audiences to make the 2016 remake a $966.6 million box office hit, paving the way for Disney to move forward with additional retellings of\u00a0its animated classics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of course, Disney hasn’t been giving everyone smiles these days. The company’s recent decision to release Mulan on Disney+<\/a>\u00a0due to the COVID-19 was met with backlash from theater owners and advocates of the theatrical experience.<\/p>\n

The Jungle Book<\/em> is now available on Disney+.<\/p>\n
