Even to this day, Nintendo holds firm that Link will remain the lead in mainline <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">titles\u2013 even if he has to share the spotlight every now &amp; again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/never-noticed-breath-of-the-wilds-great-plateau\/\">10 Things You Never Noticed In Breath of The Wild\u2019s Great Plateau<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majora\u2019s Mask<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-legend-of-zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">started to feature playable characters alongside Link\u2013\u00a0adding some much needed variety to the gameplay. Not all of Link\u2019s partners are created equally, but they each add something novel to their games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Kafei (Majora\u2019s Mask)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Kafei.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s only fitting that the most eclectic &amp; unique game in the franchise is also the first to introduce a playable character parallel to Link. Kafei is the closest thing the Hero of Time has to a Terminan counterpart. A man transformed into a boy by the Skull Kid, Kafei\u2019s fare is eerily similar to that of Link\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of his side quest, players will suddenly take control of Kafei alongside Link in order to solve Sakon\u2019s Hideout. Kafei\u2019s sections amount exclusively to timed block puzzles, but he sets an important precedent for the rest of the series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Seagull (The Wind Waker)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Seagull.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majora\u2019s Mask\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s footsteps, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makes sure to capitalize on multiple playable characters independent of Link\u2013 featuring the series\u2019 largest playable roster outside of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyrule Warriors<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seagulls can be controlled by using a Hyoi Pear, purchasable from Beedle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Players never actually need to control a Seagull at any point in the game, but they\u2019re tied to a few optional islands. Seagulls can also be used to fully scope out an island from above, but this requires keeping Hyoi Pears on-hand over Bait which isn\u2019t exactly ideal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Tower Servants (The Wind Waker)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/The-Wind-Waker.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing music is a staple of 3D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majora\u2019s Mask<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making particular use of the mechanic. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Link ends up learning the Command Melody in the Tower of Gods, a song which allows him to possess other beings\u2013 whether they be divine AI statues or his own friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-zelda-breath-wild-how-summon-blood-moon\/\">Breath Of The Wild: 10 Things You Didn\u2019t Know Summon The Blood Moon<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Command Melody is directly used to solve the Tower\u2019s many puzzles, Link moving the Tower Servants with his baton. Tower Servants are slow and locked to the ground, their progression requiring Link to clear a path beforehand so they can traverse with ease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Medli (The Wind Waker)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Medli.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives players the impression that the Earth and Wind Temples can be done in any order, Makar won\u2019t even spawn until Link has already escorted Medli through the Earth Temple and awakened her as a Sage. Like the Temple Servants, Link must play the Command Melody to control Medli, but she\u2019s actually quite fun to control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does Medli have her own personal Mirror Shield through her harp\u2013 adding a brand new layer to Mirror Shield puzzles\u2013 she can actually fly &amp; glide, capitalizing on 3D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s verticality in a way no other dungeon had before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Makar (The Wind Waker)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Makar.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s fitting that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s last formal dungeon is the Wind Temple, but it\u2019s a set piece that\u2019s rather hit or miss. On one hand, it\u2019s the most in-depth and puzzling dungeon in the game. On the other hand, Makar is a bit frustrating to control &amp; he lacks Medli\u2019s charisma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is Makar pitifully slow and clunky, his weightless body means he\u2019ll easily get swept by wind currents inside the dungeon. Players are meant to use these gusts of wind to their advantage to move Makar around, but he\u2019s by far the worst put-together character in the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Midna (Twilight Princess)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/9-Zelda-Twilight-Princess-Midna.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navi and Tatl blur a line when it comes to control as Z-Targeting is framed through their models, but control stays firmly on Link when it comes to moving &amp; fighting (both actions players can make while targeting.) Midna in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes this one step further by attacking in conjunction with Link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Navi and Tatl whose actions are more metaphysical, Midna is capable of techniques and attacks Link outright can&#8217;t do when she\u2019s briefly incapacitated at the game\u2019s mid-point. Midna\u2019s presence is as a part of Link\u2019s natural tool kit and not as a designated alternative playable character, but it\u2019s worth noting considering <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses its partner character in a subtly mechanical manner no other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Gongoron (Phantom Hourglass)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Gongoron.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games go, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phantom Hourglass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably has the most gameplay gimmicks concentrated into one title. Between touch controls, sailing, puzzles designed around the DS\u2019 literal architecture, and the Temple of the Ocean King, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phantom Hourglass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a daunting experience that at times only feels like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superficially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/breath-of-the-wild-blood-moon-tips\/\">Breath Of The Wild: 10 Things You Should Always Do Under The Blood Moon<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For what it\u2019s worth, the game does have compelling dungeon design. One of the last dungeons in the game, Goron Temple, features players controlling a young Goron\u2013 Gongoron\u2013 alongside Link to solve some light puzzles. Interestingly, Gongoron set the foundation for Zelda\u2019s inclusion in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Princess Zelda (Spirit Tracks)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Spirit-Tracks.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with bringing back many of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phantom Hourglass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 main gimmicks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 main selling point is the fact that Princess Zelda accompanies Link on his entire journey. While Zelda spends most of the game as a Phantom (more on that in just a bit,) she\u2019s a proper living being at the start of the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not much gameplay, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features an early joint stealth section for both Link and Zelda while the latter is still alive. Not only do players get an opportunity to control Zelda before things to turn south, it\u2019s a clever introduction to the dual character mechanic that defines the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Phantom Zelda (Spirit Tracks)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Phantom-Zelda.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life doesn\u2019t end at death for Princess Zelda, becoming a Phantom shortly after the events of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">begin. Zelda spends the majority of the game as a Phantom and it\u2019s through this means where Zelda gets to show off her usefulness &amp; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its most creative design decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda\u2019s Phantom can possess different armored knights, allowing her not only to solve puzzles alongside Link but actually hold her own in combat (to an extent.) Phantom Zelda isn\u2019t just Link\u2019s partner, she\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Tracks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 full on co-lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Groose (Skyward Sword)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Groose.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s faults, the game does do a very good job in balancing its main cast. Link is arguably at his most vibrant, his relationship with Zelda is the plot\u2019s driving force, and characters like Fi &amp; Groose develop considerably for non-leads. In the case of Groose, he\u2019s even briefly playable when confronting The Imprisoned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the second and third Imprisoned fights, players will be tasked with using the Groosenator to either attack the Imprisoned from afar or launch Link onto the beast.
