The game\u00a0will\u00a0release on current and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-cross-play-progression\/\">next-generation consoles with cross-play and cross-progression<\/a>, and mechanically players can expect a different experience than <em>Modern Warfare<\/em>, according to developers Treyarch and Raven Software.<\/p>\n<p>In a &#8220;virtual briefing&#8221; with <em>Call of Duty<\/em> news site Charlie Intel, Treyarch Co-Head Dan Bunting said the team is\u00a0using a new engine for <em>Black Ops Cold War<\/em>, one that &#8220;shares the &#8216;underlying technology'&#8221; with Infinity Ward&#8217;s <em>Modern Warfare<\/em> engine, but revamped with tools <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-3-zombies-skull-easter-egg-solved\/\">Treyarch has used since <em>Black Ops 3<\/em><\/a>. The technology it uses was created in 2015, according to Bunting, and is &#8220;intended to be scalable and broad to work on future platforms&#8221; like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-trailer-multiplayer-campaign\/\">Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Trailer Reveals Campaign, Teases Multiplayer<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One key difference for this new\u00a0engine is how it\u00a0will handle lighting in a way to &#8220;push <em>Call of Duty<\/em> visual boundaries,&#8221; according to Raven Software Lighting Director Alberto Noti. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war\/\"><em>Black Ops Cold War<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is aiming\u00a0to look vintage through location-specific color palettes, real-time lighting tech, and more immersive elements like fog, all without sacrificing photorealistic and visually-sharp &#8220;modern&#8221; graphics.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aTS9n_m7TW0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Though the developers have apparently been focusing on\u00a0capturing the Cold War-era aesthetic in <em>Black Ops Cold War<\/em>, the single-player portion of the experience will also stand out by letting players <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-create-character-campaign\/\">customize their character&#8217;s name, gender, background<\/a>, and more. This part of the game will serve as a direct sequel to 2010&#8217;s <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops<\/em>\u00a0with returning characters such as Frank Woods and Jason Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-raven-campaign\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaign&#8217;s story is being primarily handled by Raven Software<\/a>, which has worked on DLC for the <em>Call of Duty<\/em>\u00a0series\u00a0since being acquired by Activision in 1997. A number of other Activision studios; including Beenox, High Noon Studios, and Sledgehammer Games; are also assisting\u00a0Raven Software and Treyarch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-multiplayer-reveal-when\/\"><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em>&#8216;s multiplayer mode<\/a>, being handled by Treyarch, will be revealed on September 9.
