Many video game consoles have made an undeniable mark on the industry, but the leap forward that came with the PlayStation 2<\/a> is unbelievable. The new Sony<\/a> console brought with its many impressive features and what\u2019s largely considered to be one of the best libraries of games for any console.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation 2 found tremendous success with most of its ideas, but it also pushed forward certain innovations that flew under the radar. The PlayStation 2 is largely a two-player console, but the advent of Sony\u2019s multitap allowed more people to jump in on the multiplayer<\/a> action. However, the average gamer remained unaware of many of the games that support this feature.<\/p>\n

Updated December 22nd by Jack Pursey:<\/em><\/strong> It’s safe to say that 2020 hasn’t been the best year for local multiplayer gaming, with lockdowns preventing gamers from meeting up to either team up to take down a common foe or battle against each other in heart-pumping competition. Things are starting to look up though, and there’s reason to be hopeful that group couch gaming will make a welcome return in 2021. For this reason, we’ve decided to expand this list by a further five entries, to give a comprehensive selection of excellent multiplayer games to play that were released during the local multiplayer glory days of PlayStation 2.<\/p>\n

15 <\/span>Crash Nitro Kart<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Vicarious Visions’\u00a0Crash Nitro Kart\u00a0<\/em>may not have lived up to the high standards that Naughty Dog set with\u00a0Crash Team Racing\u00a0<\/em>in 1999, but it’s still a fantastic kart racer in its own right and great fun to play with friends.<\/p>\n

Racing isn’t the only multiplayer mode that\u00a0Crash Nitro Kart\u00a0<\/em>offers, as the game also\u00a0brings back the Battle Mode from the PlayStation 1 classic.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Released in October 2002, EA’s\u00a0Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003\u00a0<\/em>is the highest-rated golf gaming of all time on Metacritic<\/a>, with a PC Metascore of 92.\u00a0The game is also excellent on PS2 and allows up to four players to compete across multiple game modes.<\/p>\n

Most of the multiplayer modes can be played by alternating with just one controller. Speed golf, however, must be played simultaneously as it requires players to chase after their ball once they’d hit it, leading to some great golfing races.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Buzz!: The Mega Quiz<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although most of the PlayStation 2’s attempts at creating innovative equipment like the EyeToy<\/a> fell flat, there were a few that performed well; one of which is the Buzz! Buzzer.<\/p>\n

Buzz! The BIG Quiz\u00a0<\/em>was the second entry into the\u00a0Buzz!\u00a0<\/em>franchise, and is one of a whopping 13 games from the franchise that appeared on the PlayStation 2. Buzz! The BIG Quiz\u00a0<\/em>was a\u00a0huge hit with causal gamers, earning it the 2006 BAFTA for best Casual and Social game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Rock Band 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0Rock Band\u00a0<\/em>series finally gave people the chance to get a band together with friends, while giving them\u00a0the safety of a virtual crowd to\u00a0ensure that no fruit would be thrown at the struggling vocalist.<\/p>\n

Rock Band\u00a0<\/em>differentiated itself from its\u00a0Guitar Hero\u00a0<\/em>competitor by allowing four people to play simultaneously with microphone, drum, lead guitar, and bass guitar controllers.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>FIFA 2003<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The strongest entry into the\u00a0FIFA\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a> during its PlayStation 2 era,\u00a0FIFA 2003<\/em><\/a> scored an impressive 88 on Metacritic.<\/a>\u00a0As the third\u00a0FIFA\u00a0<\/em>game to release on the console, it was clear that EA had found their feet on the system; offering their most realistic soccer sim yet.<\/p>\n

FIFA 2003\u00a0<\/em>lets\u00a0up to eight players compete simultaneously, allowing for argument inducing four vs four battles.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Mystic Heroes<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Koei\u2019s explosive Dynasty Warriors<\/em><\/a> series has helped redefine the action genre with its musou <\/em>games that specialize in seemingly endless hordes of enemies that need to be taken down. The Dynasty Warriors <\/em>series has spun off in many unique directions, but Mystic Heroes <\/em>marks one of the first deviations from the norm as it embraces magic and sorcery over melee weapons and pure combat.<\/p>\n

Mystic Heroes <\/em>never lets up and it\u2019s a title that not only allows for four-person multiplayer, but there\u2019s also a co-op mode present that allows for even more of a group experience.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Micro Machines V4<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Micro Machines V4 <\/em>is an inventive take on the racing genre<\/a> and while it\u2019s far from a perfect game, it does enough things differently that it deserves its due. The main novelty of Micro Machines <\/em>is the creative tracks that emphasize the small nature of the vehicles. Players not only race, but they can assault one another with power-ups to gain the advantage.<\/p>\n

Micro Machines V4<\/em> allows for four players to race at once, but it doesn\u2019t use a split-screen option. If a player is far behind then they\u2019re left off-screen, making it much harder to win.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Rayman Arena<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Rayman<\/em><\/a> franchise is one of the quirkier platformer franchises out there and it\u2019s become a dark horse for Ubisoft over the years. Despite how the Rayman <\/em>games have done some inventive things for platformers, Rayman Arena (<\/em>known as Rayman M <\/em>in Europe) instead focuses on multiplayer gameplay and allows four people to jump in on the action. Impressively, Rayman Arena <\/em>offers both a battle-type multiplayer as well as foot races, which add a surprising amount of versatility to the spin-off title. While not as acclaimed as the core series, Rayman Arena <\/em>is much better than it deserves to be.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Project Eden<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Project Eden <\/em>is a title that got greatly overlooked during the PS2 era, but it\u2019s the kind of game that would deeply benefit from a modern remake. The game is set in a futuristic society where players control a powerful group of law enforcement officers who are hunting for some missing people. There are four members on the team, all of which have different skills that cater to the game’s puzzles<\/a>. Project Eden <\/em>can be played alone where the gamer hops between characters, but the game truly comes alive when four people are playing together and working as a team.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Quake III: Revolution<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Quake<\/em> series is one of the formative shooter franchises for the PC<\/a> that helped move the genre forward in tremendous ways. The PC was the best place to play Quake<\/em> during the early 2000s, but the PlayStation 2 offered a satisfying alternative in the form of Quake III: Revolution<\/em>. The port combines Quake III Arena<\/em> and Quake III: Team Arena<\/em> and it’s one of the first games that showed what the PS2 could accomplish with multiplayer that extends beyond simply two players. Quake III: Revolution<\/em> allows for four-player frag matches with the game handling the frenetic chaos without compromise.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Twisted Metal: Black<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The video game genre of demolition-based racers has dwindled in more recent years in favor of more traditional titles, but Twisted Metal <\/em>was one of the original PlayStation\u2019s<\/a> flagship titles and the series\u2019 big debut on the PlayStation 2 does not disappoint. Twisted Metal: Black <\/em>helps push the destructive title into the next generation of gaming and one of the biggest advents is that this messy chaos supports four players. An online update version of the game makes the multiplayer experience even more of its priority.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>007: Nightfire<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Nintendo 64\u2019s Goldeneye 007<\/em><\/a> is still looked at as one of the best multiplayer games of all time and The PS2\u2019s 007: Nightfire <\/em>is the console\u2019s attempt to cash in on the previous title\u2019s success. Nightfall <\/em>crafts an original story and the multiplayer features many love letters to classic James Bond films. The multiplayer here may not be as addictive as Goldeneye\u2019s, <\/em>but it\u2019s still an extremely satisfying substitute. The PlayStation 2 allows for up to four players to join in on the spy action, with the addition of AI bots adding even more to the experience.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Tekken Tag Tournament<\/h2>\n

The Tekken<\/em><\/a> series has been a mainstay of the fighting genre for decades and it\u2019s been exciting to watch the arcade fighter progressively shift over to the home console market. Each of the early games in the series refines the formula a little more, but Tekken Tag Tournament <\/em>is a juggernaut of a title that packs a lot into one game. Tekken Tag Tournament <\/em>still only allows for two fighters in a match at once, but the \u201ctag\u201d aspect of the game allows for four players to duke it out, two-on-two, and leads to some interesting gameplay strategies.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Gauntlet Legends: Dark Legacy<\/h2>\n

The Gauntlet Legends <\/em>series has fallen out of favor in recent years, but the games had a solid run of being some of the best four-player fantasy<\/a> action games on the market. There\u2019s a very familiar structure to the Gauntlet Legends <\/em>series as players choose from diverse classes of fighter-like wizards or warriors as they prepare for an onslaught of enemies. Dark Legacy <\/em>is the entry of the series on PlayStation 2 and the luxury of hacking and slashing through monsters and enemies with four players is such an enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Timesplitters 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The PlayStation 2 is teeming with shooters that get the adrenaline pumping, but gamers who truly want to go nuts and celebrate a wild time with a mob of people, there\u2019s no better title than Timesplitters 2<\/em><\/a>. <\/em>The time-traveling shooter doesn\u2019t just offer slick gameplay, but it has a shrewd sense of humor as it gets anachronistic with the many time periods visited in the game. Timesplitters 2 <\/em>doesn\u2019t only allow for four-person multiplayer with a multi-tap, but it even allows for a 16-player showdown with the use of the system link accessory. Even now that\u2019s an impressive feat.<\/p>\n
