With end-of-year releases starting to heat up, gamers can soon expect a heap of new games to launch in the coming months, not to mention next-gen consoles. Among the new games launching soon is\u00a0Marvel’s Avengers,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Square Enix and Crystal Dynamic’s crack at a full-fledged superhero game. It seems that\u00a0Marvel’s Avengers<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>will have one big flaw for co-op play at launch, \u00a0though.<\/p>\n

According to a recent blog post on Square Enix’s website,\u00a0Marvel’s Avengers\u00a0<\/em>co-op<\/a> won’t allow players to join missions in progress, so parties that want friends to join in mid-match will either need to exit to the menu screen, or wait for a mission to be completed before they can join in.<\/p>\n

Leaving a match early will result in an AI companion taking over for the player after they depart. If players do leave early \u2013 or are disconnected \u2013 it doesn’t seem like they’ll be able to jump back in, at least judging from the language in the blog post, though it’s one area that the post isn’t clear. It is something Crystal Dynamics may need to address if it proves to be an issue. After all, online games tend to have server issues on launch day, which could lead to disconnecting.<\/p>\n

This is a surprising omission from\u00a0Avengers<\/em>. Being able to join friends during a mission makes games feel far more seamless, as evidenced by games like\u00a0Destiny 2<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which allows players to leave and rejoin as they need to, with some exceptions. It is worth noting, however, that this is only the case “at this time,” so things could change post-launch if fans end up being vocal about the lack of in-progress matchmaking.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Marvel’s Avengers\u00a0<\/em>beta<\/a> got a lukewarm reception online, with a mixture of praise and complaints circulating various circles. The developer is planning a healthy dose of post-launch content, and live service games like\u00a0Avengers\u00a0<\/em>tend to improve over time, so things will change down the line.<\/p>\n

However, the mixed results of the beta have been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding\u00a0Spider-Man’s PlayStation exclusivity<\/a>, which has sparked numerous complaints. Spider-Man’s popularity, mixed with the fact that other platforms aren’t receiving their own exclusive content, seems to be driving complaints. Given Sony’s ownership of the Spider-Man license, it’s unlikely that will change, so fans not on PlayStation will likely have to deal with the lack of the hero. Luckily, more will be released later in the game’s life cycle.<\/p>\n

Marvel’s Avengers\u00a0<\/strong>will release September 4 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.<\/p>\n
