Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>has challenged\u00a0even the most seasoned Doom Slayers with its\u00a0labyrinthine level design, myriad secrets, and frenetic, puzzle-like\u00a0skirmishes.\u00a0But one demon type in particular stands head and shoulders above\u00a0its peers in Hell’s legions, and it will feature prominently in the games’ forthcoming DLC, The Ancient Gods: Part 1<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After a successful franchise relaunch with\u00a0Doom (2016)<\/em>, Id Software continues to ride high with\u00a0its 2019 follow-up,\u00a0Doom Eternal<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>which boasts new power-ups, bigger guns, and meaner bad guys. At Gamescom, id Software showed a fresh trailer\u00a0for\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Ancient Gods<\/em>: Part 1<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>that\u00a0revealed the\u00a0DLC would be dropping late this October. But shooting veterans eager for more challenging foes may be in for more than they bargained for, regardless of their experience.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with PCGamesN, Game Directo\u00a0Hugo Martin and Executive Producer Marty Stratton detailed some of the DLC’s features. When asked about the number of Marauders appearing in the DLC, Game Director Hugo Martin\u00a0simply stated “There are a lot.” The fearsome, horned warrior is unquestionably the game’s hardest foe, and\u00a0one of the coolest-looking demons in the entire\u00a0Doom<\/em> franchise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Martin\u00a0pointed out that players would be starting\u00a0The Ancient Gods\u00a0<\/em>with a “fully loaded” kit\u2014an experience comparable to entering cheat codes in the original. Such a power boost will take acclimation, and that is likely doubly true for\u00a0players who pick up the DLC without playing Eternal’s<\/em> base campaign<\/a>. Martin\u00a0also\u00a0revealed there is an encounter with two Marauders simultaneously,\u00a0but he was quick to add: “there’s a balance – it feels amazing,”\u00a0though\u00a0he also admitted that even he finds the fight challenging.<\/p>\n

Even though The A<\/em>ncient Gods <\/em>is\u00a0Eternal<\/em>‘s first narrative-driven DLC, the game has received\u00a0numerous updates since launch, though not all of them have been well-received. In May,\u00a0Eternal\u00a0<\/em>was review-bombed after an update\u00a0included Denuvo<\/a>, but Bethesda and id Software listened to player complaints and removed the controversial anti-cheat system in a subsequent patch. Other updates have included new maps, modes, and other content to keep players busy during the wait for\u00a0The Ancient Gods.<\/em><\/p>\n

Another notable quality-of-life upgrade will hit this fall. Players who have already purchased\u00a0Eternal<\/em>\u00a0on console and plan on jumping to next-gen systems\u00a0will receive\u00a0a free, next-generation version of\u00a0Doom Eternal <\/em>for their\u00a0new system<\/a>. Seeing a developer exercise this sort of care and responsiveness toward their player base is encouraging, and for a series set in the bowels of Hell, Doom’s<\/em> future looks hopeful. It’s a good thing, too. When facing down multiple Marauders, Slayers will need all the hope they can muster.<\/p>\n

Doom Eternal\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is available now for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version also in development. Its first DLC, The Ancient Gods: Part 1,<\/em>\u00a0will be available on October 20th, 2020. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are also in development.<\/p>\n
