Tripwire Interactive is known these days for its games that\u00a0are particularly gory, featuring\u00a0blood and dismemberment.\u00a0The Killing Floor<\/em> and, more recently, the decently reviewed Maneater<\/em><\/a> are some of its claims to fame. One of its titles that has found a niche audience is\u00a0Chivalry: Medieval Warfare<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Chivalry<\/em>\u00a0is less about strategically squaring off against knights, and more about how many decapitations\u00a0one can rack up before being brained with a lute. The game is good fun, and that’s more of what\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em><\/strong> is poised to deliver. Announced last year,\u00a0it is already clear that\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/a><\/em> will follow in the first game’s bloody footsteps.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> was announced, it was made clear that it would be part of the PS5 launch lineup<\/a>. The original\u00a0Chivalry<\/em> still looks pretty good for what it is, and\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em>‘s trailers have\u00a0shown that the updated graphics engine will make the game gorgeously gory. Unfortunately, it looks like the game will no longer be part of the PS5’s initial launch this year. It has been officially announced that\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> is being delayed until next year, and the actual month of release is unknown.<\/p>\n

This is unfortunate, especially since\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> would have been a great point of entry. Chivalry 2<\/em> is confirmed to have crossplay across platforms<\/a>, and players who got to try the alpha have reported good things. While a beta was planned for the game this summer, that has also been pushed back. As\u00a0many games launching with the next console generation are standalone,\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> as a sequel would have provided something reliable and familiar for anyone looking to step into the next generation.<\/p>\n

Of course, the first\u00a0Chivalry<\/em> is not for everyone, and the devs know this full well.\u00a0The Chivalry<\/em> devs have acknowledged that the game is fun while drunk<\/a>, and that many players are not in it for the high skill ceiling. There are no illusions that\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> would try to step out of these bounds, and indeed Tripwire has little need to try and make it a smash hit.<\/p>\n

But a reliable mindless fun Medieval combat simulator might be just what the doctor ordered for a new console generation. Each new console is a risky purchase, and if there is nothing to keep and hook the player, they can feel resentful and annoyed. A good multiplayer game can go a long way to assuaging that anger, just like\u00a0Warhawk<\/em> did for the early days of the PS3. And if the recent pirate themed update for Killing Floor 2<\/em><\/a> shows anything, it’s that Tripwire knows how to make a game that is good, reckless fun. Here’s hoping\u00a0Chivalry 2<\/em> is still fun when it comes out, no matter when that may be.<\/p>\n

Chivalry 2<\/strong><\/em> will release in 2021\u00a0on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n
