Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/strong><\/em> has been keeping gamers occupied all summer with its new updates, but there’s one easily missed feature that has been there from Day 1. Veterans of the series know all too well that the real end\u00a0game behind their\u00a0adorable neighbors is a chance at a rare framed selfie of theirs.<\/p>\n

New Horizons<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is known for its vast customization options and casual-yet-committed player base, so the inclusion of rare, functionally useless treasure should come as no surprise.\u00a0While the original Animal Crossing<\/em>\u00a0simply featured\u00a0an in-game furniture item called “Nook’s Portrait,”\u00a0Animal Crossing: Wild World <\/em>introduced the concept of framed villager portraits. Ever since, players have been able to earn a framed portrait of any resident villager\u00a0after successfully befriending them.<\/p>\n

As mentioned above, players can earn a framed portrait of\u00a0any<\/em> villager in\u00a0AC: New Horizons.\u00a0<\/em>The portraits all feature the same photo used for the posters\u00a0available from Nook Shopping, but\u00a0they’re instead framed and offer a fun-fact\/quote when interacted with.\u00a0If taken to a workbench, the frames on these photos can also be customized. While islanders’ posters are simply unlocked in the Nook Shopping catalog<\/a> by inviting a villager to Harv’s Island, the framed photos require a bit more effort.<\/p>\n

In order to earn a framed\u00a0photo of an\u00a0islander, players must first nearly max out their friendship with that particular resident. Given that\u00a0AC: New Horizons\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t offer a\u00a0direct\u00a0guide to measuring friendship levels with villagers<\/a>, this involves some degree of guess-work and luck, but nonetheless, it’s a fairly simple process.<\/p>\n

Islanders’ friendship levels rise when a player gives them a gift (literal bonus points for wrapped gifts), or generally\u00a0assists\u00a0them by completing tasks or\u00a0helping\u00a0catch fleas<\/a>, for example. In this case, players will want to spend time developing their friendship with an islander until that particular islander allows the player to change their greeting. This marks the fifth of six tiers of friendship in\u00a0AC: New Horizons<\/em>, and signifies that the player\u00a0has a chance at obtaining their photo as a gift.<\/p>\n

Once players have reached the appropriate level of friendship with their preferred islander, they should simply focus on generously showering them with gifts, whenever possible. A villager’s photo will be given to the player as a gift from\u00a0an islander themselves. Although there’s no way to force an islander to gift their photo, there are ways to eliminate undesirable gifts from the reward pool.<\/p>\n

The currently accepted method for “farming”\u00a0islander photos involves triggering a reward\u00a0by gifting something valuable to a villager<\/a>, but forcing\u00a0them to send it\u00a0by mail by maintaining a full inventory. To do so, simply follow these steps:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Carry a stack of non-native fruit while pockets are full<\/li>\n
  2. Approach a villager and gift them the fruit<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The fruit counts as a\u00a0present valuable enough to trigger a\u00a0gift-back<\/a> from the islander, but because\u00a0the player’s inventory remains full after the gift, the islander\u00a0is forced to mail their gift. This is significant because islanders are unable to mail money, which is to say, this eliminates the chance of receiving bells as a gift entirely, thereby indirectly increasing a player’s odds at receiving a framed photo.<\/p>\n
