He would later use teams to come up with designs, but he still plays a significant part in finalizing them. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gonintendo.com\/stories\/314573-ken-sugimori-on-making-sure-pokemon-aren-t-too-cute-or-cool\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Sugimori,<\/a> &#8220;What I actually do is take something cool and make it less cool. While Pikachu is based on the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>pika animal, a Pok\u00e9mon like Magnemite is based on magnets. There are also cases of Pok\u00e9mon based on <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-pseudo-legendary-pokemon-ranked\/\">fictional creatures like dragons or the Loch Ness monster.<\/a> Which Pok\u00e9mon design is your favorite?\u00a0This is every <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> generation, ranked by their Pok\u00e9mon designs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Generation IV<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-4-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>A popular part of Generation IV is its legendary Pok\u00e9mon. Giratina, a Ghost and Dragon-type, makes this generation worth mentioning.<em> Pok\u00e9mon X and Y<\/em>&#8216;s mascots, Dialga and Palkia, are also iconic additions to spectacular games. Rotom is an Electric-type and Ghost-type who can transform itself into the shape of a Pok\u00e9dex. Pok\u00e9mon designs are not all about how they appear, but their visual design is your first impression. In this case, Rotom is smartly designed to play a significant part in in-game progression.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Generation V<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-5-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The weak suit of Generation V is its starter Pok\u00e9mon. Having quality designs for a generation&#8217;s starter Pok\u00e9mon is critical. At this point in the series, The Pok\u00e9mon Company begins to show some laziness with designs. Zebstrika is essentially a zebra with Electric-type moves. Also, who could forget Garbdor, a Pok\u00e9mon that is made out of trash? These designs are amusing, but not ideal choices for a Pok\u00e9mon master&#8217;s party.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Generation VI<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-6-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>This generation of <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-pokemon-need-mega-evolutions-sun-moon\/\">introduced Mega Evolutions.<\/a> It could be argued that Pok\u00e9mon copied <em>Digimon<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0Ultimate Evolution. However, Mega Evolutions were later changed into Dynamaxing in Generation VIII. The introduction of new Mega Evolutions like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Mewtwo X and Y, and Mega Rayquaza was a game-changer. In addition, there are several legendaries and mythical Pok\u00e9mon that make the generation stand out. We can&#8217;t forget Generation VI Pok\u00e9mon like Volcanion,\u00a0Hoopa, Yveltal, and\u00a0Xerneas.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Generation III<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/generation-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>There was a noticeable downgrade in Generation III Pok\u00e9mon appearances compared to Generation II. The Pok\u00e9mon had less memorable designs, despite being a robust entry in the mainline series. You can find a whopping\u00a0213 in <em>Pok\u00e9mon Emerald<\/em> without trading.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fastest-pokemon-of-all-time\/\">The 15 Fastest Pok\u00e9mon Of All Time<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Generation I Pok\u00e9mon appear in Generation III, so it could be argued that it&#8217;s better. However, this list only takes the Pok\u00e9mon that were introduced in the generation into account. With Pok\u00e9mon designs like Milotic,\u00a0Salamence,\u00a0Sharpedo,\u00a0Metagross, Rayquaza,\u00a0Groudon, and Blaziken, this generation was a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-beat-mewtwo-battle-powerful\/\">worthy addition to the Pok\u00e9dex.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Generation VII<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-7-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The seventh generation of the <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> mainline games was headlined by <em>Pok\u00e9mon Sun and Moon.\u00a0<\/em>Many of the Pok\u00e9mon contained in this generation follow a Hawaiian theme, the location the generation is loosely based on. Set in the Alola region, we see Alolan themed Pok\u00e9mon like Raticate, Grimer, Diglett, and Raichu. These Pok\u00e9mon gave players a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-sword-shield-classic-features-gone-missing\/\">taste of the classic games,<\/a> but with subtle changes. Little thought went into a Pok\u00e9mon like\u00a0Toucannon, but we didn&#8217;t mind it because of the rich detail. Other notable Pok\u00e9mon include\u00a0Golisopod, Primarina, Palossand, and\u00a0Guzzlord, Solgaleo, and Greninja.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Generation II<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The second generation of the <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games contained polished designs that resonated with fans. Some of our favorite Pok\u00e9mon designs from the second generation include Tyranitar, Umbreon, Lugia, Ho-Oh Houndoom, and Totodile. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-everyone-thinks-pseudo-legendary-actually-arent\/\">elusive roaming legendary beasts<\/a> include Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. Qilfish, Igglybuff, and Unown had designs that don&#8217;t fit the themes of the generation. Regardless, there is plenty to\u00a0love\u00a0in the Johto region. After all, it&#8217;s a generation that introduced baby Pok\u00e9mon like Pichu and Magby.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Generation VIII<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/gen-8-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Seeing Pok\u00e9mon for the first time in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-generation-9-improvments\/\">3D on a video game console<\/a> was eye-opening. This generation contained <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pokemon-sword-and-shield\/\"><em>Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em>,<\/a> the first mainline games to launch on video game consoles. Visually pleasing designs were one of the highlights of the generation. There are subtle details in the Pok\u00e9mon that you don&#8217;t see in the previous games. Some of\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-sword-shield-generation-8-best\/\">best Generation\u00a0VIII Pok\u00e9mon designs<\/a> include\u00a0Centiskorch,\u00a0Toxtricity,\u00a0Obstagoon,\u00a0Sirfetch&#8217;d, and\u00a0Zacian.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Generation I<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/kanto-pokemon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The first generation may not have had the most detailed designs, but it gave us an abundance of iconic Pok\u00e9mon. The designs didn&#8217;t need to be\u00a0needlessly complicated. We like nearly every design (if not all of them). Ultimately, each person is entitled to an opinion, and some people will love or hate a generation&#8217;s designs.<\/p>\n<p>This generation of the <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> mainline games will <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-games-main-series-ranked-completion-times\/\">forever be remembered<\/a> for Pok\u00e9mon like Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Gengar, Gyarados, and Zapdos. Charizard is like a dragon but has a lizard-like appearance. Pikachu is based on the pika animal, but with electric attacks.
