The plot centers around two rugged survivors, Joel and Ellie, and their strange, yet beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-joel-ellies-relationship-changed-games\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">father-and-daughter-like bonding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-walking-dead-better-survival-game\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Last Of Us Vs. Telltale\u2019s The Walking Dead \u2013 Which Is Better?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, as well-received and well-loved as this definitive franchise is, some games may top\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0for any number of reasons. Today we&#8217;ll check out a few zombie &amp; horror games that\u00a0might actually be better than\u00a0<em>The Last of Us,<\/em>\u00a0and five ways\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0tops them all.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>TLOU: Scare Factors<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rat-king.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Being a post-apocalyptic survival horror game, it&#8217;s only natural that\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0knows how to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-part-two-jump-scares-ranked\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scare its players<\/a>. From hidden Infected creatures sticking on the wall to the chillingly eerie Seraphite&#8217;s whistling,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0has an abundance of scare factors to make anyone jump out of their seat or rage quit, and it makes full use of its kit to that end.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Outlast &amp; Outlast 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/outlast-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>However,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0is miles behind compared to\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/outlast-horror-games-most-stressful\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Outlast\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Outlast 2<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>in terms of scare factors. Although this may not be a typical zombie game, it&#8217;s still worth noting that\u00a0<em>Outlast\u00a0<\/em>has a whole buffet of elements with which it can give you constant nightmares.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike\u00a0<em>The Last of Us,\u00a0<\/em>where you can shoot your way out to the finish line if you have enough ammo,\u00a0<em>Outlast\u00a0<\/em>puts you into a more vulnerable role. You&#8217;re an investigative journalist with a night vision-equipped camcorder trying to make it through the night. The only choices you have are to hide, run, or die.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>TLOU: Free-World Roaming<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/last-of-us-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>and its\u00a0<em>Part II\u00a0<\/em>sequel feature plenty of iconic locales. From Pittsburgh to Tommy&#8217;s Jackson settlement in Wyoming,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0has a vast map ready to be explored, especially during your Seattle chapter with Ellie.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-2-crazy-development-stories\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 Crazy Stories About The Last Of Us 2&#8217;s Development<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<em>Part II<\/em>\u00a0was designed as an\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/last-of-us-part-2-open-world\/#:~:text=The%20Last%20of%20Us%3A%20Part%20II%20was%20originally%20designed%20to,creative%20director%20on%20the%20title.&amp;text=In%20an%20interview%20with%20IGN,to%20be%20more%20open-world.\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open-world game<\/a>\u00a0at first. Initially, the game would take place in Jackson and give some sense of freedom to explore the city. Unfortunately, this idea was scrapped as the writers developed the storyline\u00a0and felt like it wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0suit Ellie&#8217;s character arc.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Dying Light<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/dying-light-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a better open-world zombie game, then consider\u00a0<em>Dying Light.\u00a0<\/em>Even though it&#8217;s not as big as\u00a0<em>Grand Theft Auto V<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Dying Light<\/em>&#8216;s medium-sized map is enough to give you the freedom to roam around the dead city of Harran and explore its\u00a0<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dying-light-easter-eggs-left4dead-plants-vs-zombies\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hidden references<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Story-wise,\u00a0<em>Dying Light<\/em>\u00a0lets you control Kyle Crane, an undercover agent, as he becomes entangled between continuing his mission or helping out the remaining survivors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>TLOU: Rich Story<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ellie.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0is one of those games that gets you emotionally hooked. It tells the story of Joel and how he goes from calling Ellie his &#8216;cargo&#8217; to his &#8216;baby girl,&#8217; while\u00a0<em>Part II<\/em>\u00a0largely deals with the consequences of protecting Ellie and focuses on her own journey. It&#8217;s the story of how far one\u00a0could go to protect (or avenge) their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from its graphics,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>&#8216; deep story is the standout feature of this game. The character development feels crisp, alive, and powerful, but pulls no punches in showcasing the brutal realities of the world it takes place in.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>The Walking Dead<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/clem.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Telltale&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead<\/em>\u00a0interactive game is likely the leading contender with\u00a0<em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>in terms of evocative storytelling. The first season centers around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/the-last-of-us-lee-everett-joel-miller\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lee Everett<\/a>, a former historian (and a convicted killer) stuck in the\u00a0midst of the zombie apocalypse with a little girl\u00a0named Clementine. After that, <em>TWD<\/em> focuses more on Clem and her growth into a tough, badass survivor for the next three seasons.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us Part II<\/em>\u00a0was criticized for inconsistency and a plethora of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-part-2-biggest-plot-holes\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plot holes<\/a>. Like Joel and Tommy, some characters are sloppy, clumsy, and really out of their arc.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>TLOU: Relatable Characters<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/dark-joel.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike most zombie games where you take roles of high-profile agents or soldiers,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0centers around Joel. He&#8217;s not an ordinary everyman protagonist who&#8217;s always right, but rather a controversial character with a skewed and somewhat crooked moral compass.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-last-of-us-infected-types-difficulty-beat-ranked\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Last Of Us: Every Type Of Infected Ranked By Difficulty (&amp; How To Beat Them)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But behind all that, Joel is just a man who wants nothing but the best for his loved ones, no matter what he has to sacrifice in the process. Joel is so candid, and it&#8217;s what makes players resonate with this character so much.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Resident Evil 7<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/re7.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Following the lackluster welcome to\u00a0<em>Resident Evil 6<\/em>, Capcom took a step back to return to the franchise&#8217;s original horror roots in\u00a0<em>Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.\u00a0RE7<\/em> is the only\u00a0<em>Resident Evil<\/em>\u00a0game to not feature any original character as its lead hero or heroine.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<em>Resident Evil 7<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of Ethan Winters, a small-time engineer trying to find his missing wife in the middle of a no-man&#8217;s land. Seeing how far one could go to protect someone they love is practically always a solidly relatable concept to weave a horror story around.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>TLOU: Challenging Infected Creatures<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/last-of-us-2-clicker.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0has plenty of unique Infected types according to their infection stage. Ranging from an easy Runner to the bloated, conjoined, and disgusting-looking Rat King, all Infected creatures in\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0are more than ready to keep you\u00a0panicked.<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you&#8217;re a fan of challenges, try &#8220;Grounded&#8221; difficulty &#8211; where you won&#8217;t get to use the &#8216;listening mode,&#8217; making the playthrough a struggle for the ages.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Resident Evil 2 &amp; 3: Remake<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/mr-x.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s only been one night since the start of the catastrophe in Raccoon City, but these undead creatures have already been evolving in the\u00a0<em>Resident Evil 2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Resident Evil 3<\/em>\u00a0remakes.
