Some see valid arguments from one side or the other, others see it as just corporations fighting for more money, while others still <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/epic-tim-sweeney-weaponize-fans-response\/\">question Epic\u2019s attempts to get <em>Fortnite<\/em> players involved<\/a>. Among all these opinions is that of noted filmmaker Ridley Scott, whose work was parodied as part of Epic\u2019s opening salvo against Apple.<\/p>\n<p>It was clear from the get-go that Epic was ready to start a legal battle, because at the same time the company announced that it was suing Apple, it <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fortnite-apple-short-1984\/\">dropped a <em>Fortnite<\/em> version of Apple\u2019s famous \u201c<em>1984<\/em>\u201d ad<\/a>. Originally aired to a wide audience during that year\u2019s Super Bowl, it used the classic dystopian novel of the same name to frame how Apple\u2019s then-upcoming Macintosh computer would effectively free consumers from an oppressive status quo. Similarly, Epic\u2019s \u201c<em>Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite<\/em>\u201d parody is trying to frame the App Store\u2019s revenue policies, which demand a 30% cut of all purchases made within iOS apps, in the same light.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/epic-games-lawsuit-apple-google-explained\/\">Epic Games&#8217; Lawsuit Against Apple, Google Explained<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of all this, IGN recently asked Scott, who directed <em>1984<\/em> in addition to such acclaimed films as <em>Alien<\/em> and <em>Blade Runner<\/em>, if he\u2019s seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/fortnite\/\"><em>Fortnite<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s take. \u201cI sure have,\u201d he replied, \u201cand I wrote to them because on the one hand I can be fully complimented by the fact they copied [my commercial] shot for shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h62AhBb5N1Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite the flattery he felt in that regard, Scott made it clear that he was disappointed in <em>Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite<\/em> ultimately, calling its message \u201cso ordinary when they could have been talking about democracy or more powerful things\u2026 And they didn\u2019t use it.\u201d Going on, he added, \u201cI think the animation was terrific, the idea was terrific, the message was \u2018ehh\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not hard to see the reasoning here. Whereas Apple was a relative newcomer challenging the norms of the computer market back when <em>1984<\/em> aired, <em>Fortnite<\/em> is one of the most successful video games ever made and one of the biggest shapers of gaming\u2019s status quo these days. Putting that into consideration, one can understand why a lot of people might see Epic\u2019s efforts to overturn the App Store\u2019s policies and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/fortnite-epic-apple-lawsuit-tencent-freefortnite\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#FreeFortnite<\/a>\u201d as more of an attempt to make even more money off the game, instead of the benevolent act of rebellion it\u2019s painting it as.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the legal battle wages on, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/court-deals-major-blow-epic-games-fight-apple\/\">court recently giving Apple the first major win in Epic\u2019s lawsuit<\/a>.
