The <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/snes\">Super Nintendo<\/a> in particular was arguably defined best by its platformers (if not its <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/rpg\">JRPGs<\/a>.) The console opened strong with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 arguably the greatest launch title of all time\u2013 and was followed up by one of the strongest libraries in gaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/snes-rpgs-play-time\/\">10 Longest SNES RPGs (&amp; How Long They Take To Beat)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario All-Stars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remakes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoshi\u2019s Island<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of the best platformers on the SNES are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mario<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> games. It\u2019s not unexpected, but it overshadows other great platformers. While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mario <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has always been a trendsetter for platforming, some of the best platformers on the SNES are unique games with their own identities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Demon\u2019s Crest<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Demons-Crest.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demon\u2019s Crest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is worth playing for the atmosphere alone\u2013 one of the darkest games on the Super Nintendo tonally and thematically. The protagonist, Firebrand, is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Ghouls n\u2019 Ghosts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enemy and the setting is jarringly dystopian. There\u2019s little light to the world and the soundtrack brings with it a truly ominous vibe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While overworld exploration is unfocused, the stages themselves serve as slower paced, action heavy alternatives to the many platformers on the SNES. The difficulty curve also skews higher than the average Super Nintendo game, a nice challenge for genre veterans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Donkey Kong Country<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-2020-08-05T174009.145.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is pure atmosphere from top to bottom. A moody journey through beautiful landscapes grounded in reality. The difficulty curve gradually climbs throughout the game, offering continuous challenge as players progress. The best boss fights and stages demand sharp reflexes &amp; an eye for telegraphs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a franchise has a silly quality to it these days, but the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has an energy other games in the series lacks. It\u2019s self aware of its role as a video game and quite funny, but the gameplay itself is downright artistry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy\u2019s Kong Quest<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/diddy-kong-quest.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a beast in and of itself. Where the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a moody quality grounding the game\u2019s overall aesthetic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diddy\u2019s Kong Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is far more chaotic\u2013 indulging in a level of spectacle that was rare for the original. All the same, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DKC2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still grounded in the original\u2019s world, yet to veer to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s extremes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-bros-first-games-luigi-was-playable\/\">Super Mario Bros.: The First 10 Games Luigi Was Playable In<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a pure design level, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a step up in every respect. Although a much harder platformer all around, stages are dense with fair challenges and the level design makes clever use of both Diddy &amp; Dixie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Kirby\u2019s Dream Land 3<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Kirby-Dream-Land-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby\u2019s Dream Land 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a slow platformer by design, but that in itself is its strength. Reducing Kirby\u2019s mobility and exchanging the series\u2019 usual art style in favor of a soft &amp; almost dream-like aesthetic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream Land 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a one of the most unique games in its franchise. It\u2019s as much a puzzle game as it is a platformer, featuring several brain teasers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is usually easy, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream Land 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is hard. Where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is usually about letting you fly wherever &amp; however, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream Land 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greatly restricted Kirby\u2019s abilities. It all leads to one of the most novel platformers on the SNES, however\u2013\u00a0a beautiful game that\u2019s surprisingly morbid when all is said &amp; done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Kirby Super Star<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/7-Kirby-Super-Star.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby Super Star <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the total antithesis to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream Land 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fast-paced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game that\u2019s jampacked with action from start to finish. In many respects, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Star <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a love letter to the franchise, adhering as closely to the series\u2019 history as possible\u2013 even remaking the original game in the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Star <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a compilation of multiple <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games, all short but worth playing. Dyna Blade is a traditional <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game, Revenge of Meta-Knight is its narrative driven &amp; atmospheric sequel, The Great Cave Offensive is basically a Metroidvania, and Milky Way Wishes is arguably the best <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirby <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Mega Man 7<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6-Mega-Man-7.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man 7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of the more overlooked entries in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rockman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series, but it\u2019s a great platformer that offers a 16-bit alternative to the Blue Bomber\u2019s adventures in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man X<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man 7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was compared (perhaps unfairly) to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man X <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the time of its release, but it offers a vastly different experience to its sister games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man 7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through and through. While the level design does feature secrets ala the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sub-series, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MM7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feels like the logical next step coming off of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man 6<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a slower paced game, and harder than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to boot, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man 7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is nonetheless a great platformer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Mega Man X<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/MEga-Man-X-Zero.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best games on the Super Nintendo, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man X <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a fast paced experience that masterfully blends action with platforming. Giving X a dash fundamentally alters the gameplay loop for the better, and all the upgrades hidden across the game\u2019s stages make exploration a rewarding part of the experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/megaman-x-sub-tank-locations\/\">Mega Man X: Every Sub-Tank Location &amp; How To Get Them<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man X<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s music, graphics, boss fights, and level design are some of the best in the franchise\u2013 maybe even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mega Man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s peak. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s attempts at telling a darker story are also as welcome as they are unintrusive, letting the gameplay speak for itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Super Castlevania IV<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Super-Castlevania-IV.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Castlevania IV <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is beautiful. Visually, musically, and atmospherically, there\u2019s nothing else quite like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Castlevania IV <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the Super Nintendo. Some might argue that Simon\u2019s omnidirectional whipping makes the game too easy, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCIV <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is designed with this mechanic in mind. More importantly, New Game+ is ostensibly a hard mode that showcases the merits of Simon\u2019s new whip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even without playing through hard more, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Castlevania IV <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a fantastic platformer with incredible level design and some of the best bosses in the franchise. The difficulty curve is a step down from the NES games, but virtually everything else is a massive step up for the series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Super Ghouls N\u2019 Ghosts<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/super-ghjouls.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Ghouls N\u2019 Ghosts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a brutally hard platformer that requires quick reflexes, pattern memorization, and a commitment to suffer anything &amp; everything the game throws at you. Death happens fast, there are traps everywhere, and fully beating the game means making two full playthroughs back to back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Ghouls N\u2019 Ghosts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a hard game, but it\u2019s an excellent platformer that offers some of the best challenge on the SNES. It also features a fantastic soundtrack, great 16-bit graphics, and a control scheme that\u2019s surprisingly fun to master.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Super Metroid\u00a0<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/3-Super-Metroid.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Metroid <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is arguably more of an action-adventure game than it is a platformer, but it does feature fairly involved platforming mechanics and level design that\u2019s more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Castlevania IV <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symphony of the Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Regardless of how one views <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Metroid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s one of the best games on the Super Nintendo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond an incredible amount of secrets, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Metroid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s controls are second to none and its level design masterfully plays off everything Samus can do mechanically.
