Square Enix has recently revealed that the\u00a0sequel\u00a0to\u00a0Final Fantasy 7 Remake<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is in active development,\u00a0and while little is known about the next part of Cloud’s saga, much less has been said of the next installment in the main Final Fantasy<\/em> franchise.\u00a0The prior installment in the main franchise,\u00a0Final Fantasy 15,\u00a0<\/em>dropped on\u00a0consoles\u00a0in 2016\u00a0after a\u00a0decade of development\u2014a far cry from the series’ annual release schedule in its PlayStation-to-PlayStation 2-era heyday. But given the challenges of satisfying fans’ titanic expectations, these long gaps may become the new normal,\u00a0not without good reasons.<\/p>\n

Even before the tremendous success of Remake<\/em>, few video game franchises\u00a0could compare to\u00a0Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a>‘s legacy and reputation. The storied series is\u00a0not only the face of Japanese role-playing games around the world,\u00a0but a major force in the video game industry as a whole, with\u00a0console-defining installments like\u00a0Final Fantasy 6<\/em> and the original Final Fantasy 7<\/em>\u00a0pushing the boundaries of graphics, music, and storytelling throughout the medium. And while the expectations for\u00a0Remake<\/em> were towering, the title delivered and Square Enix\u00a0effectively doubled its annual earnings over the last fiscal year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Such bounties can be mixed blessings however, and\u00a0Remake<\/em>‘s stellar success may prove to be a double-edged buster sword for the franchise as a whole. Remake’<\/em>s clever additions to\u00a0Final Fantasy 7’s\u00a0<\/em>core story<\/a> have led to intense speculation about the follow-up,\u00a0leaving fans clamoring to know what is in store for Cloud and company. As a result, anything less than a spellbinding announcement for\u00a0Final Fantasy 16\u00a0<\/em>will likely register as weak tea\u00a0compared to a property that fans are already deeply intensely invested in.<\/p>\n

There are also\u00a0budgetary constraints\u00a0to consider on Square Enix’s part. Stretching resources across two tent-poles,\u00a0while also maintaining and expanding the series’ latest\u00a0MMORPG offering,\u00a0Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>, could be detrimental to the development of\u00a0all titles involved. This is especially true given the logistical challenges facing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2<\/em>,\u00a0including the Modern Warfare<\/em>\u00a0problem of cross-generational platform progression<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In many respects, the safest move Square Enix can make would be to continue riding high on\u00a0Remake<\/em>‘s success.\u00a0And that may already be the case, seeing how the only information available about the inevitable, hitherto unannounced next entry in the main franchise is the plausible-yet-unsurprising\u00a0rumor that Final Fantasy 16<\/em>\u00a0will be a\u00a0PlayStation 5 timed-exclusive<\/a>.\u00a0But if Square Enix focuses its efforts entirely on a loving stroll down Nostalgia Lane, it could spark a disappointing trend\u00a0for a series that\u00a0distinguished itself by introducing bold new worlds and fresh mechanics with each main-series installment.<\/p>\n

Despite those difficulties, there are ways\u00a0Final Fantasy 16<\/em>\u00a0can succeed in the face of\u00a0Remake<\/em>‘s fierce-but-friendly competition. No matter when the title ends up releasing, players will rightly expect it to surpass the titles that have come before it. There are a few obvious tweaks Remake<\/i>\u00a0can make for a better player-experience<\/a> which would also translate handsomely to\u00a0Final Fantasy 16.\u00a0<\/em>Ultimately though, trying to re-skin\u00a0Remake<\/em>‘s engine and system with a fresh world would be a losing play.\u00a0Square Enix simply cannot afford to be that conservative with what comes next for the main franchise.<\/p>\n

Rather than providing a polished version of what came before, or falling back on feature wish lists\u00a0based on past titles<\/a>,\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>would tremendously benefit from something wholly unique. Producing a compelling, completely original world (and associated magic and battle systems)\u00a0is a colossal undertaking,\u00a0but it promises the greatest potential for victory\u2014and may also mitigate the risks associated with developing two titles simultaneously.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0Final Fantasy 16\u00a0<\/em>features gameplay that diverges from the\u00a0Kingdom Hearts-<\/em>influenced, action-oriented model of\u00a0Final Fantasy 15\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Remake,\u00a0<\/em>it could simultaneously court new players who found recent installments unappealing as well as devoted\u00a0fans. And even if\u00a016\u00a0<\/em>flops,\u00a0Remake<\/em> will be there to save the day. It wouldn’t be the first time\u00a0Square Enix\u00a0<\/em>took that kind of risk, either. Shortly after the original Final Fantasy 7<\/em> launched, Square Enix unleashed another title bearing the Final Fantasy<\/em> name with radically different\u00a0mechanics. That series,\u00a0Final Fantasy Tactics,\u00a0<\/em>deserves its own proper revival (rather than a Twitch-based gambling game)<\/a>, but in the meantime, it serves as an excellent example\u00a0of\u00a0how\u00a0Square Enix\u00a0could get creative.<\/p>\n

Another important move would be to put a different director and character designer in the driver’s seat for Final Fantasy\u00a016<\/em>. Tetsuya Nomura’s creations are iconic, and his influence on\u00a0Remake<\/em> was essential for capturing the\u00a0spirit of the original. In response to eager\u00a0Final Fantasy 7\u00a0<\/em>fans,<\/em>\u00a0Nomura stated he hopes to produce the next installment of Remake quickly<\/a>. As such, his attention should remain devoted to that series\u00a0and the\u00a0Kingdom Hearts<\/em> franchise, leaving the director’s chair open for fresh talent to bring new ideas to the table.<\/p>\n

There are countless ways things could go wrong, but some pitfalls are more obvious than others. The worst mistake\u00a0Square Enix could make would be to ignore the elephant in the room and pretend that the\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>franchise has been completely subsumed by the Final Fantasy 7\u00a0<\/em>Remake <\/em>project.\u00a0Players who were never taken with that particular title will lose interest, assume the company has run out of ideas, and\u00a0turn their attention elsewhere. Given the tremendous success of Persona 5<\/em> and\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em>, Atlus could easily take\u00a0Square Enix‘s\u00a0<\/em>lunch money with the next main-series\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>title. An innovative, direct sequel to the Persona 5\u00a0<\/em>story line<\/a> could provide compelling competition as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

Fortunately, despite Square Enix’s radio silence, it does not appear the company will let\u00a0its flagship franchise languish entirely.\u00a0A private Twitter account appearing to be a placeholder for Final Fantasy 16<\/em><\/a> has surfaced, suggesting that development may be in progress behind the scenes. Given the lack of updates however, it will likely be a long time before the world gets a glimpse at what is next for the world’s best-known JRPG franchise. If the long development cycle and eventual success of\u00a0Final Fantasy 7 Remake\u00a0<\/em>is any indication, however, good things are well worth waiting for.<\/p>\n

Final Fantasy 7 Remake\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is available now for PlayStation 4.\u00a0Final Fantasy 16\u00a0<\/em>has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
