Chrono Trigger<\/i> was a dream project. It\u2019s a miracle it came out and continues to amaze two decades later. Square was ahead of its time with this one, so the question then was what was to come next.<\/span><\/p>\n

Should their be a sequel? If so, what should it be about? The answer was Chrono Cross,<\/i> and the name alone made it sell. However, it\u2019s also nothing like its predecessor. It too is a treasured RPG for its platform, the PS1<\/a>. Both games have their fans, but which among them is the best? Let\u2019s go through every aspect of the games in order to determine a winner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Story: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Time travel, up to this point, was a rare feature in RPGs and games in general. It was mostly used as a backdrop for games, or maybe a mechanic, but it was not so intricately woven into a story until Chrono Trigger<\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The story is timeless, whereas it\u2019s a bit harder to articulate what exactly Chrono Cross<\/i> was about. It was a bit too convoluted and confusing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Party Members: Chrono Cross<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

One of the defining features of Chrono Cross<\/i> was its diverse cast of optional characters. More does not always mean better. In this case the game didn\u2019t have enough time to allow players to get to know them, unlike Chrono Trigger<\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

That said, in terms of gameplay variety for characters, Chrono Cross<\/i> has its predecessor beat by a mile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Characters: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As it was just touched on, the failures of Chrono Cross\u2019<\/i> characters is that the game doesn\u2019t allow players enough time to get to know them. Variety is the spice of life, and because there are so many different possible combinations, this means all types of players can create their own play styles. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

As cool as that is, the smaller, more intimate party in Chrono Trigger<\/i>, is better from a narrative perspective. The only exception is Crono, who is a blank slate, but so is Serge, so that point is kind of moot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Replay Value: Chrono Cross<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Just like the character selection, Chrono Cross<\/i>\u2019 endgame content is legendary. Both RPGs<\/a> have excellent New Game+ modes in fact, which allow players to re-experience the games from new perspectives. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

That said, the one thing Chrono Cross<\/i> has over its predecessor is a fast-forward feature. This was implemented way before it became more standardized for remastered versions of games. In this way,\u00a0Chrono Cross<\/i> was ahead of its time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Music: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

“Time\u2019s Scar” from Chrono Cross<\/i>, is hands down not only one of the best songs ever created, but it was a way better opening tune than Chrono Trigger\u2019s<\/i>. It jazzed the player up for an ultimate adventure. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

While the other music in the game is also beautiful, there\u2019s just no beating the consistency of Chrono Trigger\u2019s<\/i> soundtrack. From the court scene melody to Frog\u2019s theme, these are songs that will forever be embedded in the heads of players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Graphics: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Technically, Chrono Cross<\/i> was a more impressive game at the time of its release. While its colors and diverse island locations help it stand out among PS1<\/a> games, it still looks a bit dated.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Chrono Trigger\u2019s<\/i> graphics, on the other hand, have pixel perfect sprites that could stand next to modern pixel games and look equally as new, if not even better. The 16-Bit generation wins a lot of battles when it comes to standing the test of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Gameplay: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There are so many reasons why Chrono Trigger\u2019s<\/i> mechanics are better than its sequel. First of all, Chrono Cross<\/i> went back to random battles. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

There are team attacks (sort of) in the game as well, but they were not as fleshed out and easy to use compared to Chrono Trigger<\/em>\u2019s. At its heart,\u00a0Chrono Trigger<\/i> was just a tweaked version of Final Fantasy<\/i><\/a>, but one that was tweaked to RPG perfection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Villain: Tied<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Both games struggled to have a defining villain. While Magus was a cool first third, the rest of the game features a giant alien bug that posed a threat but didn\u2019t have charisma.\u00a0Chrono Cross<\/i>\u00a0suffered almost the exact situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

It first focused on Lynx, but then the plot veered toward dragons and inter-dimensional beings, which again, caused some convoluted plot lines to appear. In order to be truly memorable, there has to be a good villain. Look at Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII<\/em>. Without him, the game wouldn’t be nearly as exciting or memorable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Verdict: Chrono Trigger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This was hardly a fair fight. Chrono Trigger<\/i> is one of the best RPGs, or games really, ever made. It was a dream project between so many legendary creators from Japan that recapturing that magic without the whole team was seemingly impossible. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The SNES was blessed.\u00a0Chrono Cross<\/i> is by no means a bad game, even though it lost to it’s predecessor in most of these categories. It is a very good RPG<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t groundbreaking, unlike Chrono Trigger<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
