Trying to determine the “Best Games Ever<\/a>” doesn’t do justice to the fact that there are a ton of game genres out there. Each game is great in its own way. Just like movies have their own categories: action, horror, comedy, drama, sci-fi, etc., games do too. Determined by gameplay, the major genres for games are action, adventure, open-world, sports, RPG, racing, and strategy.<\/p>\n

Comparing the action shooter game\u00a0Call Of Duty<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>to the street racing game\u00a0Need For Speed<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>wouldn’t yield any significant findings. However, comparing different games to similar games within their category would be a much better comparison, like comparing\u00a0Grand Theft Auto<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0Watch Dogs<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>With that said, here are the best games according to Metacritic for each major genre.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Action | Metroid Prime (Metascore: 97 \/ User Score: 9.2)<\/h2>\n

Metroid Prime<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a classic FPS game<\/a>\u00a0that centers around varied levels, platformers, and puzzles. Released in 2002,\u00a0Metroid Prime\u00a0<\/em>has quite the innovative gameplay mechanics of its time. Players have a ton of weapons to use, a lot of enemies to fight against, some platforms to scale, and can even morph into a ball for that extra speed, allowing Samus to fit through small spaces.<\/p>\n

The masterfully crafted biomes, along with the detailed special effects,\u00a0gives\u00a0Metroid Prime\u00a0<\/em>a more realistic feel in an action-packed game. The fast-paced nature of the game, along with the mobility abilities and destructive weapons, places\u00a0Metroid Prime\u00a0<\/em>as the highest-rated action game of all time.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Adventure | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time\u00a0 (Metascore: 99 \/ User Score: 9.1)<\/h2>\n

The Legend Of Zelda<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise is no stranger to adventure games<\/a>. Every single\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>game is filled to the brim with stuff to do and quests to fulfill.\u00a0Ocarina Of Time<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>takes Link across vast and varied locations, each with its own grand sense of adventure.<\/p>\n

Puzzle-solving, platformers, and combat are only half of what makes\u00a0Ocarina Of Time\u00a0<\/em>so great. What makes this adventure game such a masterpiece is its beautiful soundtrack, colorful characters, and vibrant world, where nothing gets boringly repetitive. As happy and feel-good as the game can get,\u00a0Ocarina\u00a0<\/em>Of Time\u00a0<\/em>can also get deep and murky, taking the player across a moving orchestra of experience. It’s not surprising that\u00a0Ocarina Of Time\u00a0<\/em>is the highest-rated game of all time.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Open-World | Grand Theft Auto IV (Metascore: 98 \/ User Score: 7.6)<\/h2>\n

Rockstar <\/em>is a\u00a0detailed watchmaker when it comes to creating open-world games<\/a>.\u00a0Grand Theft Auto IV<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the highest-rated open-world game of all time. Though\u00a0GTA V<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the latest installment of the franchise,\u00a0GTA IV\u00a0<\/em>had more detailed features to make the open-world crime game an actual life simulator.<\/p>\n

Every nook and cranny, every nuance of the mundane world is implemented into the virtual realm of Liberty City. Though\u00a0GTA V\u00a0<\/em>is a must-have for open-world fans,\u00a0GTA IV\u00a0<\/em>shouldn’t be overlooked. Its singleplayer experience is definitely something to re-live.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Family | Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Metascore: 97 \/ User Score: 9.1)<\/h2>\n

When family games<\/a> come to mind, something colorful and animated with basic gameplay is what gamers tend to think of first.\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>takes players to wonderful worlds across the galaxy. In this incredible platformer,\u00a0is\u00a0different and more challenging than the last. However,\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy 2\u00a0<\/em>is anything but simple.<\/p>\n

Though it starts off with toddler-level easy difficulty, the game finds ways to challenge players with each new level,\u00a0providing fun for the whole family. This earns\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy 2 <\/em>the place\u00a0as the highest-rated family game.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Fighting |\u00a0SoulCalibur (Metascore: 98 \/ User Score: 8.5)<\/h2>\n

Developed in 1999, the original\u00a0SoulCalibur<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the greatest fighting classics<\/a> of all time. The game has incredible graphics for its time, along with some very intuitive combat mechanics anyone can get used to.\u00a0SoulCalibur\u00a0<\/em>also operates in a 3D space, letting players strafe left and right. This was very innovative at a time, when characters could previously only move about a 2D space.<\/p>\n

This 1999 game performs similar to modern-day\u00a0Tekken<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and has the graphics of 2007\u00a0Final Fantasy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>games.\u00a0With that said,\u00a0SoulCalibur\u00a0<\/em>was way ahead of its time. This lands as the highest-rated fighting game of all time.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Multiplayer | Halo: Combat Evolved (Metascore: 97 \/ User Score: 8.5)<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Halo<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise is one of the most iconic FPS franchises<\/a> of all time. Halo: Combat Evolved<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a massive multiplayer game, featuring tons of different weapons and vehicles to decimate opponents with. Aside from an exhilarating campaign mode, the game also features a timeless multiplayer mode that gamers to this day still love.<\/p>\n

Halo: Combat Evolved\u00a0<\/em>has five core game modes:\u00a0Slayer, a mode where players must kill as many opposing players as possible; Oddball, where rounds are won by holding the ball for a set time without being killed; good ole Capture The Flag; King of the Hill where players hold a control point for a set amount of time, and\u00a0Race. The variety, complexity, and endless approach to the battlefield reward\u00a0Halo\u00a0<\/em>the highest rating a multiplayer game has ever achieved.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Role-Playing | Mass Effect 2 (Metascore: 96 \/ User Score: 8.9)<\/h2>\n

The greatest RPG<\/a> of all time is surprisingly not a fantasy or medieval one. Rather, it’s set in space, some years into the future. Mass Effect 2 <\/em><\/a>is the middle title in the\u00a0Mass Effect\u00a0<\/em>trilogy. Like Mass Effect 1\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a03,\u00a0<\/em>it\u00a0tailors the gameplay experience for each player, making the adventure feel more personal.<\/p>\n

The decisions and dialogues players\u00a0choose has a different effect on the story, and the gameplay is impressively varied as well.\u00a0There are six classes to choose from; adept, soldier, engineer, vanguard, infiltrator, and sentinel. Each of these classes has two subclasses to specialize in. Everything can be customized, and anything players do in this game will have an effect. It’s no surprise that\u00a0Mass Effect\u00a0<\/em>2 is\u00a0<\/em>the highest-rated RPG on Metacritic.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Sports | Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (Metascore: 98 \/ User Score: 7.5)<\/h2>\n

Skateboarding games<\/a> are a sandbox for fun tricks and thrashing mayhem.\u00a0Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the king of this genre. Players are free to make an entire abandoned warehouse their playground. Cool tricks can be performed, huge jumps, and sweet grinds. There are also ramps where players can do impressive flips.<\/p>\n

Players can chain together tricks for massive points, earning new unlocks such as skaters and tricks. The fun gameplay of\u00a0Pro Skater 2\u00a0<\/em>perfectly captures skateboarding culture, encouraging players to just “go for it.” This earns\u00a0Pro Skater 2\u00a0<\/em>the highest rating a sports game has ever earned.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Racing | Gran Turismo (Metascore: 96 \/ User Score: 8.6)<\/h2>\n

Gran Turismo<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a simulated racing franchise<\/a> that rivals the arcade gameplay of\u00a0Need For Speed.\u00a0<\/em>The original\u00a0Gran Turismo, <\/em>published\u00a0in 1998, puts players behind the wheel in an action-packed circuit racing. There are nearly 200 different cars to choose from, all real-life and licensed, and each car controls and feels different.<\/em><\/p>\n

Though the graphics obviously don’t hold up to today’s standards, at the time, it was as realistic as video games can get. The physics and the controls were also realistic, making the racing experience authentic and life-like. For a game in ’98,\u00a0Gran Turismo\u00a0<\/em>did more than deliver. This earns it the highest rating given to a racing game, ever.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Strategy | Command & Conquer (Metascore: 94 \/ User Score: 8.9)<\/h2>\n

Published in 1995, Command and Conquer<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the earliest RTS games<\/a> ever developed. The game is a military strategy game with fog mechanics that encourages exploration. Players are guided with a live-action briefing before jumping into the game.\u00a0Like any strategy game, players mine resources, construct buildings, and train troops to wage against the opposition. Players give orders to manned vehicles and on-the-ground infantry units, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n

For a ’95 game, there is a lot of detail that goes into\u00a0Command and Conquer’s\u00a0<\/em>skirmishes. Gunshots sound punchy, explosions are bassy, and despite its graphics, everything is visually comprehensive. The game indeed lives up to its name. Command battalions to conquer the enemy. This makes\u00a0Command and Conquer\u00a0<\/em>the highest-rated strategy game of all time.<\/p>\n
