After a few decades, 15 main series titles, and quite a lot of spinoffs,\u00a0Square Enix<\/a>‘s Final Fantasy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>isn’t as final as the title suggests. Moreover, the critical acclaim of hit releases such as\u00a0FF7<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0FF14<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>show the timeless quality of Square Enix’s works. However, it seems Square Enix didn’t just pop out one\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>title after another. In fact, hardcore fans know the publisher had a few rough patches in the form of unreleased spinoffs and cancelled titles.<\/p>\n

Some fans might wonder just what titles didn’t make it to the acclaimed franchise, if any of these titles evolve into released games, and what exactly happened to these titles that led to their cancellation. Read on to find out the stories behind these unreleased– or released and later cancelled– entries.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>FF 14 1.0 Part 1: Rapture<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Players of\u00a0Final Fantasy 14\u00a0<\/em>might be surprised to learn that\u00a0FF 14\u00a0<\/em>had a “cancelled” iteration, but that explains why\u00a0FF14: A Realm Reborn\u00a0<\/em>is officially considered\u00a0FF14 2.0<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0Despite delayed beta tests and praise for its music and graphics, the original version of\u00a0FF14 <\/em>left players with the impression that it was a rather unfinished game.<\/p>\n

The lackluster interface and gameplay, as well as conflicts with the Crystal Tools engine, led to negative reception and caused internal staff changes, “letters from the producers” populating the game and the main website, and official polls for player insight. All things culminated\u00a0when servers went online on 2012,\u00a0and the game’s narrative eventually led to a catastrophic event that sends players into the “future,” which became the FF14<\/em> that is currently active.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>FF Versus\u00a013: The Concept Behind FF 15<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In its original conception,\u00a0Versus 13\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Agito\u00a0<\/em>served as companion games for\u00a0FF13,\u00a0<\/em>all of them being part of\u00a0FF13<\/em>‘s overarching\u00a0Fabula Nova Crystallis\u00a0<\/em>theme.\u00a0Players who saw footage of\u00a0FF Versus 13\u00a0<\/em>a few years ago\u00a0noted that the fast-paced battles were very\u00a0Kingdom Hearts<\/em>-esque. As time went on,\u00a0Versus 13\u00a0<\/em>would eventually become\u00a0Final Fantasy 15<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

FF15<\/em>\u00a0took\u00a0a lot of the core ideas in\u00a0Versus 13<\/a><\/em>, including\u00a0a modernized premise, action-packed combat, the cast of characters, and their basic powersets. However,\u00a0FF15<\/em>‘s place in the\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>franchise became clouded as the years went by.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Final Fantasy Agito 13<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Fans of\u00a0Type-0<\/em>‘s Class Zero know that the game used to be in development as\u00a0Agito 13<\/em>. Despite announcements for a mobile release, Square Enix opted to redevelop the title for the PlayStation Portable. Original director Hajime Tabata wanted\u00a0Agito 13\u00a0<\/em>to tackle heroes challenging a god in a believable fantasy story, with Class Zero eventually making a stand against the warring factions, including their own, in an effort to stop the conflict.<\/p>\n

The original mobile game idea for\u00a0Agito 13\u00a0<\/em>did come to fruition in the form of\u00a0Final Fantasy Agito<\/em>, a mobile game. Unlike\u00a0Type-0<\/em>, that mobile title focuses on player choice as they get to make their own character and interact with\u00a0Type-0<\/em>‘s main cast.\u00a0As for the original\u00a0Agito 13<\/em>, it\u00a0<\/em>was cancelled in 2015.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Final Fantasy Dimensions<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Square Enix released\u00a0Final Fantasy Dimensions<\/em>, an episodic mobile game, in 2010. Essentially,\u00a0Dimensions\u00a0<\/em>gives mobile users a signature light-versus-dark\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>experience with 2D graphics as well as the classic Job System.\u00a0Unfortunately, the game eventually met its end in March 2018 alongside other titles of the Square Enix Mobile Portfolio.<\/p>\n

Players who played\u00a0Dimensions\u00a0<\/em>may have appreciated its presentation, with it taking the episodic format akin to\u00a0FF4: The After Years<\/em>. Moreover, the game used the Active Time Battle system with party members<\/a> changing every episode. While\u00a0Dimensions\u00a0<\/em>is no more, Dimensions 2<\/em>, a game under the\u00a0Dimensions\u00a0<\/em>branding with a standalone story, lives on as of this writing.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Final Fantasy Type-Next<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Fans who loved the darker and more mature take of\u00a0Type-0\u00a0<\/em>clamored for a sequel. Director Hajime Tabata answered with artwork for a planned follow up,\u00a0showing feudal Japanese settings and a main character resembling Class Zero’s Ace. However, Square Enix didn’t release any information as to how– or even if–\u00a0Type-Next <\/em>tied in with\u00a0Type-0<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fans know little about the true nature of\u00a0Type-Next<\/em>. In its initial form, the game\u00a0looked like a prototype for eighth-generation consoles. Unfortunately, this concept got left behind when the\u00a0Type-0\u00a0<\/em>team got transferred to work on FF15<\/em>. Fans still hope for the eventual release of\u00a0Type-Next\u00a0<\/em>as Square Enix didn’t officially announce the cancellation of the title, but\u00a0it seemed unlikely after\u00a0Tabata\u00a0left Square Enix\u00a0in 2018.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Fortress<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Aside from\u00a0Final Fantasy Tactics<\/em> and\u00a0FF12<\/em>,\u00a0Square Enix\u00a0planned make other games set in Ivalice, approaching Stockholm-based GRIN to work on a spinoff for\u00a0Final Fantasy 12<\/em>. Fans eventually heard about\u00a0Fortress\u00a0<\/em>when GRIN’s team spoke up about the project\u00a0following the studios’s closure. At that time,\u00a0FF13\u00a0<\/em>director Motomu Toriyama\u00a0confirmed the cancellation of\u00a0Fortress<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fortress<\/em>\u00a0supposedly starred FF12<\/em>‘s\u00a0Basch fon Ronsenburg in a journey against an ancient evil that only a fortress could hold off. Basch proved unsuccessful and had to call on Vaan and the rest of his comrades back for “one final mission.” It seems Square Enix didn’t approve of\u00a0Fortress<\/em>‘ intended art direction, as it had heavy Norse influences that strayed away from\u00a0FF12<\/em>‘s art style.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Chocobo De Battle<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Square Enix actually had something in store for Chocobo lovers. If Square pushed through with\u00a0Chocobo de Battle<\/em>, fans in the early 2000s would have a Chocobo battle racing game similar to\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em>. Breaking with the company’s tendency to focus on home platforms,\u00a0Chocobo de Battle\u00a0<\/em>would’ve released as an arcade title with full 3D graphics.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, it’s the battle system that\u00a0could’ve made\u00a0Chocobo de Battle\u00a0<\/em>a potentially-awesome game, especially for its time of release.\u00a0It seems\u00a0Chocobo de Battle\u00a0<\/em>would’ve had\u00a0motion controls, with players having to wave their hands on a part of the machine to move their Chocobo and perform combos.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Chocobo Racing 3D<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Interestingly, Square Enix almost released a Chocobo racing game for the Nintendo 3DS. Square announced\u00a0Chocobo Racing 3D\u00a0<\/em>for the 3DS back in 2010, albeit with no confirmation of its relation to the original\u00a0Chocobo Racing\u00a0<\/em>game. Unfortunately, the team announced the game’s cancellation in 2013.<\/p>\n

Square hasn’t revealed much about this title. However,\u00a0it is assumed it would have had similar gameplay to\u00a01999’s\u00a0Chocobo Racer<\/em>, perhaps even being a kind of remake of that title. As such, fans\u00a0would’ve had\u00a0Mario Kart-<\/em>esque gameplay featuring\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>characters in various vehicles, likely accompanied by an\u00a0awesome soundtrack<\/a>.<\/p>\n
