Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Maker 2<\/strong><\/em> will feature Mario 35th-anniversary content later this year. A special anniversary-themed Ninji Speedruns course will be added to the game in November.<\/p>\n

Fans of\u00a0Super Mario Maker 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>are no strangers to the game’s Ninji Speedruns mode, which asks players to speedrun\u00a0Nintendo-designed levels and compete for the best times.<\/p>\n

Nintendo has not given any indication of what exactly the anniversary speedrun course will look like. It’s entirely possible that Nintendo may choose a simple throwback that takes Mario back to his roots, such as replicating\u00a0an iconic\u00a0level from one of the NES Mario<\/em> games. Alternately, the speedrun could showcase Super Mario Maker 2<\/em>‘s quirky hidden power-ups<\/a>\u00a0in a new way, as did the recent\u00a0Player’s Choice: Power-Up Party Ninji Speedruns course.<\/p>\n

The announcement did not indicate\u00a0any kind of reward for\u00a0participating in the anniversary activity, but it is still a possibility.\u00a0Given\u00a0the addition of\u00a0Mario\u00a0furniture in\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em><\/a>, it would not be surprising for Nintendo to add some kind of anniversary-themed avatar to\u00a0Super Mario Maker 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It’s important to clarify that this update\u00a0will not add any new course elements for players to use. Super Mario Maker 2<\/em>‘s last massive update<\/a>\u00a0in April 2020\u00a0gave players a lot to work with, and\u00a0Nintendo has made clear it is the game’s last major update.\u00a0Nintendo has since chosen to solely prolong the game’s lifespan through\u00a0new Ninji Speedruns courses.<\/p>\n

Even if\u00a0Super Mario Maker 2<\/em> will no longer be receiving any kind of new courses or course themes, it is nice that Nintendo thought to include it in the anniversary celebrations. The game’s focus on creativity requires an active community to thrive, and Nintendo continues to fuel creative flames with its additions to the game.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Super Mario Maker 2<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is now available for Switch.<\/p>\n
