Wasteland 3<\/strong><\/em> is a wild ride that sees the Arizona Rangers venture into nuclear winter Colorado<\/a>, where players are subject to insane clowns, communist robots, and so much more. Players experience a number of absurdities throughout the game, as well as a few Easter eggs. One of them alludes to Game of Thrones<\/em> and is a little on the nose for fans of the series: the Iron Throne. SPOILERS for Wasteland 3<\/em> ahead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As many fans no doubt know, the Iron Throne was forged by Aegon the Conqueror after 6 of the 7 independent kingdoms of Westeros submitted to his rule. Many would sit on the throne over the years, but it was often a symbol of foreboding and Mad Kings. For example, Joffrey and Aerys II Targaryen both sat upon the throne and abused its power. Others would occasionally grace the chair, but wars were fought after Robert Baratheon’s death about who would sit on it, and Wasteland 3<\/em><\/a> builds on this similar premise.<\/p>\n

This symbol of power is also found in Wasteland 3<\/em>. Players are summoned to Colorado by the Patriarch, who wants the Rangers to capture (not kill) his children: Liberty, Valor, and Victory. The Patriarch’s Throne resembles the Iron Throne, but instead of swords, it features nuclear missiles to emphasize the post-apocalyptic nature of the world.\u00a0In this manner, Aegon the Conqueror can be seen in the Patriarch,\u00a0who brought some stability to the Wasteland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Patriarch’s throne and the Iron Throne<\/a> are both responsible as motivations for the political intrigues that take place in Wasteland 3<\/em> and Game of Thrones<\/em>. And with that in mind, the Patriarch’s children can also come to represent other elements of vying powers for the chair. Valor only does what he does through the manipulation of others, making him seem like Tommen Baratheon, Joffrey’s brother, if less innocent than Tommen.<\/p>\n

Victory, on the other hand, is utterly insane and wants to seize it for himself. His abuse of power is blatant, meaning Victory aligns well with the motifs and motivations behind the Mad King and Joffrey, who see it as something to serve themselves. The biggest threat to the Patriarch’s throne is Liberty, who leaves Colorado Springs, assembles a “foreign” army, and returns with more than enough power and claim to boot the Patriarch from his chair. It’s easy to see Daenerys<\/a> in Liberty, without much squinting required.<\/p>\n

Of course, Liberty doesn’t make it as far as Daenerys, and this is obviously not a 1:1 comparison. But even in the wasteland, it’s clear “when you play the Game of Thrones<\/a>, you win or you die,” or get arrested by the Rangers, as it were.<\/p>\n
