The Mass Effect Remastered Trilogy<\/em><\/strong> is looking more likely than ever before. With rumors circulating that the remaster could be announced by BioWare on N7 Day 2020\u00a0or even sooner in October,\u00a0Mass Effect<\/em> fans are more excited than ever to return to their favorite stores on the Citadel, especially after the disappointing release of Mass Effect: Andromeda<\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, after Andromeda<\/em> and the even more disappointing critical and commercial reception of Anthem<\/em>, BioWare has a lot riding on the Mass Effect Remastered Trilogy<\/em><\/a> in the eyes of many fans. If it turns out that EA\u2019s planned \u201cHD Title\u201d is not in fact Mass Effect<\/em>, BioWare could be in hot water right before the upcoming next generation of consoles and not due to any fault of its own, truth be told.<\/p>\n

The rumors of a Mass Effect Remastered Trilogy<\/em> have been circulating for years. In 2014, the general manager of BioWare\u2019s Edmonton and Montreal studios, Aaryn Flynn,<\/a> posted on the NeoGaf forums to ask fans what they\u2019d be interested in seeing in a remaster of the original trilogy.<\/p>\n

Recent events, however, have led many fans to think that 2020 could be the Mass Effect<\/em> remaster\u2019s year<\/a>. May 2020 saw EA announce 14 games planned to be released before the end of the fiscal year, including an \u201cHD Title\u201d than has yet to be announced that is rumored to be the remaster.<\/p>\n

June 2020 saw the entire original trilogy released on Steam, while in July, publisher Dark Horse announced that it would be publishing The Art of the Mass Effect Trilogy: Expanded Edition<\/em><\/a> on February 23, 2021. All of this seems to point to a Mass Effect<\/em> remaster, at least in the eyes of many hopeful fans. However, it also raises the stakes significantly for BioWare.<\/p>\n

BioWare has a few games confirmed to be in production right now, including an overhaul\u00a0of Anthem<\/em><\/a>, Dragon Age 4<\/em>, and Mass Effect 5<\/em>. The latter\u00a0is in a difficult position in the same way as Andromeda<\/em>, trying to tell a new story while not stepping on the toes of the radically different implications of the three endings for Mass Effect 3<\/em>. Anthem<\/em>\u2019s poor initial release also means that an overhaul is far from a safe financial bet for the studio, which leaves a lot resting on Dragon Age 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n

While Dragon Age: Origins<\/em> was extremely successful, the luke-warm reception of Dragon Age 2<\/em> took part of the wind out of the franchise\u2019s sails in a way that never happened for Mass Effect <\/em>until Andromeda<\/em>. Indeed, many consider Mass Effect 2<\/em><\/a> to be the best game in the series, and the fact that the Mass Effect<\/em> trilogy has one consistent protagonist has helped to make the series slightly more iconic than its fantasy counterpart.<\/p>\n

As a result a Mass Effect Remastered Trilogy<\/em> could help BioWare restore confidence in both its fans and its investors during a particularly tumultuous time for a company that, at the start of the decade, was considered to be at the absolute top of the RPG industry. Fortunately, these are also all great arguments for the Mass Effect<\/em> remaster that could hopefully make it more likely than ever. Fans will be looking forward to N7 Day<\/a> 2020 in hopes of finally getting the confirmation many have long expected.<\/p>\n
