That remains a mystery for the time being, but new evidence has emerged suggesting it won\u2019t be much longer until the company is ready to acknowledge its existence.<\/p>\n<p>For years now, it\u2019s been rumored that the next generation of Xbox would continue the trend set by the Xbox One X and Xbox One S, where the pricier high-end console is accompanied by one with\u00a0lower specs and a more modest cost. Rumors of this budget console, allegedly codenamed \u201cLockhart,\u201d have only become more prevalent following the Xbox Series X\u2019s reveal last year. Combined with the repeated instances lately of Microsoft products mentioning the console, it\u2019s easy to <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/xbox-series-s-microsoft-controller-next-gen-leak\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">call the Xbox Series S Microsoft\u2019s worst-kept next-gen secret<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/xbox-series-s-leak-game-pass-controller\/\">Xbox Controller Packaging Leaks Xbox Series S Console<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a slight change of pace, the newest evidence of the Series S\u2019 existence comes not from Microsoft, but from the ESRB. As first spotted by Andrew Marmo on Twitter, the ratings board has changed up its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-esrb-rating-brothels-hallucinogenics\/\">ratings for next-gen games like <em>Assassins\u2019 Creed Valhalla<\/em><\/a> and <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em>. Before, they labeled \u201cXbox Series X\u201d as the next-gen Microsoft platform for these games, but now they\u2019re merely described as coming to \u201cXbox Series.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/the_marmolade\/status\/1302854907708477441\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Marmo also noticed that some retailers have followed suit and begun listing next-gen Xbox games under the Xbox Series moniker, which led him to guess that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/xbox-series-x-release-date-reveal-delay-september\/\">Xbox Series S could be announced in just a few weeks<\/a>. Meanwhile, it\u2019s been discovered that the European ratings board, PEGI, has also done something similar to the ESRB, with its listings now using \u201cXbox (2020)\u201d in place of \u201cXbox Series X.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MACOS380\/status\/1302856018226040833\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This could mean a lot of things ultimately, but the biggest implication is what many have suspected for a while now: that \u201cXbox Series\u201d isn\u2019t simply the name of a new console. Rather, it\u2019s a catch-all term used to describe an entire slate of new systems. The name itself suggests that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/xbox-series-x\/\">Xbox Series X<\/a> is just the headliner in Microsoft\u2019s larger next-gen ecosystem, leaving room for other ways for users to access it, like the budget-friendly Series S, and maybe even upgraded models a few years from now.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, this is still just speculation until Microsoft officially announces something, but by this point, it\u2019s doubtful that the XSX will be the only Xbox console launching in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Xbox Series S<\/strong> is allegedly in development.
