In the last few years, it seems\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/em>\u00a0series has been a lot more free and encouraging with spin-off titles and expanding the\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>universe. Games like\u00a0Cadence of Hyrule<\/em>, the\u00a0Crypt of the Necrodancer<\/em> spin-off featuring reorchestrated\u00a0Zelda<\/em> tracks, would’ve never existed before the Wii U days. In fact, the first Hyrule Warriors<\/em> game was the milestone spin-off game to start this trend. Now,\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/strong> is a\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>-centric\u00a0Warriors<\/em> game that may have more narrative impact than its predecessor.<\/p>\n

What’s more interesting than getting another\u00a0Warriors<\/em> game set in the\u00a0Zelda<\/em> universe is that\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a> may have an interesting place on the official timeline. A hint from the actual trailer itself does hide one very important detail:\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> may serve more as an “interquel” instead of a prequel. The game’s actual narrative will certainly take place in the past, but it’s very possible this story is being told to\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> Link in service to a story beat in\u00a0Breath of the Wild 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Hyrule Warriors<\/em> was the first modern spin-off game for the\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>series in years. There were plenty of mainline\u00a0Zelda<\/em> games that came out like\u00a0Skyward Sword<\/em> on the Wii and\u00a0A Link Between Worlds<\/em> on 3Ds, but a true big-budget spin-off game hadn’t come out since 2007 with\u00a0Link’s Crossbow Training\u00a0<\/em>on Wii.\u00a0As its namesake suggests,\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> was one of the many offshoots from the broader\u00a0Dynasty Warriors<\/em> series by Koei Tecmo.\u00a0The first\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> was a love letter compilation of all the best\u00a0Zelda<\/em> characters<\/a> mixed together into the trademark hack and slash combat Koei Tecmo is known for.<\/p>\n

Whereas\u00a0Hyrule Warriors\u00a0<\/em>was more of a greatest hits from\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/em>,\u00a0this time\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> has the opportunity to tell a canon storyline in the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> universe. Koei Tecmo has had this chance before with\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em><\/a>, but for\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/em> to tell a canon story from a spin-off game has never really happened before, or at least in such a capacity as\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>. Generally the major story beats of\u00a0Zelda<\/em> stick to mainline games, but\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> is proving to be an interesting exception. That being said,\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> may have even more impact on the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> storyline than just existing as a prequel.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> trailer, an unfamiliar voice states to Link “I think you are now ready, ready to hear what happened 100 years ago.” It’s not made immediately apparent whose voice this is, so this could be an original character to\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>, but more importantly is what this statement implies.\u00a0It seems\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> is being told from the perspective of the future<\/a>, perhaps in the time between\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> and its sequel, or at the beginning of\u00a0Breath of the Wild 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Link is finally learning the whole story of what happened when Calamity Ganon defeated Hyrule a century earlier. However, now that he’s defeated the Calamity, why would he need to know this full story unless it’s relevant for another reason? Why does Link need to be “ready” for this story? It’s very possible Age of Calamity<\/em> is connected to\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s sequel in some form<\/a>.\u00a0This would be a unique opportunity for\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em>, not only to get hardcore\u00a0Zelda<\/em> fans to play a\u00a0Warriors<\/em>-style game (even if they’re not the biggest fan), but also garner the hype for\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s upcoming sequel as well.<\/p>\n

How this would come to pass remains to be seen, but it would make sense if\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em> ties into\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s sequel<\/a> in some way. That way, fans have something to tide them over until that sequel releases, as well as contextualizes why the prequel story is important.\u00a0Players who completed\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> already know the gist of what happened when Calamity Ganon first attacked. While learning about that grand battle would be interesting, it really wouldn’t be relevant unless there was some kind of hint at the end that connects to the events of\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s sequel.<\/p>\n

Not to mention that kind of connection with a spin-off game would be unprecedented for the\u00a0Zelda<\/em> series. If this turns out to be true,\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> may be a more necessary playthrough for hardcore\u00a0Zelda<\/em> fans. Not to mention this would be the first time a spin-off\u00a0Legend of Zelda<\/em> game was widely considered both canon and necessary for the mainline franchise.\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em> has a unique opportunity ahead of itself<\/a>, and could have very interesting implications on the next\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> game if true.<\/p>\n
