Nintendo’s Twitter account hinted at\u00a0upcoming news\u00a0for\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/strong><\/em>, the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>prequel. Nintendo’s Twitter page teased that\u00a0more game details\u00a0will arrive on September 26th.<\/p>\n

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a>\u00a0features the frenzied gameplay of Koei Tecmo’s\u00a0Warriors<\/em> series.\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>\u00a0is unique for telling a canon story set a century prior to\u00a0Breath of the Wild.\u00a0<\/em>The game will give players the chance to play as Link and his fellow Champions, as they wage a doomed war against Calamity Ganon.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0possible next step for Nintendo in the September 26th announcement would be to clarify which\u00a0characters are playable. The initial trailers for\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>\u00a0teased a range of exciting possibilities. For example, the trailers teased\u00a0Princess Zelda herself possibly being playable<\/a>\u00a0(and the game’s website later confirmed it). Although\u00a0fans know the four Champions are playable, other characters remain unconfirmed.\u00a0At the very least, players know\u00a0several supporting characters in\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> (such as Impa) were alive\u00a0Age of Calamity.<\/em>\u00a0This means they are also eligible to appear.<\/p>\n

Players might find hints\u00a0about future reveals from the plot threads\u00a0Breath of the Wild <\/em>left unresolved<\/a>. Link’s memories in\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>\u00a0explain Hyrule’s past, but the game reveals\u00a0little about Link’s own childhood. The game also indirectly references a few crucial conversations never shown to the player. For example, Zelda’s diary describes a moment when Link\u00a0explains to Zelda why he chooses not to talk.\u00a0Including scenes like this could raise excitement even higher, showing\u00a0new sides of both Link and Zelda.<\/p>\n

Fans might also look to the Persona\u00a0<\/em>series for hints as to future announcements. After all, this is not the first time a\u00a0Warriors<\/em>-style game expanded on a game’s canon. The as-yet-unlocalized\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is both a\u00a0Warriors<\/em> game and a\u00a0canon sequel to\u00a0Persona 5.\u00a0<\/em>However,\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble’s<\/em> announcement didn’t clarify it was a direct sequel. This was only revealed later on. If this\u00a0major aspect of\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em>\u00a0did not appear initially,\u00a0perhaps\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>\u00a0hides something significant as well.<\/p>\n

There is another\u00a0unlikely but very exciting possibility for the upcoming announcement. Hyrule’s past could include teases\u00a0for the hotly-anticipated\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> sequel<\/a>. Both\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> and the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> sequel appear to use the same map of Hyrule. This means new locations\u00a0around Hyrule could appear in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>, and then\u00a0return in\u00a0the Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>sequel. In any case, fans\u00a0only need to wait about two weeks to learn more about one of 2020’s biggest titles.<\/p>\n

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/strong><\/em> will release for the Nintendo Switch on November 20th.<\/p>\n
