While it wasn’t the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> game every fan expected, another\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> game is a welcome surprise. The first game acted as a love letter compilation to all of the highlights from\u00a0The Legend of Zelda\u00a0<\/em>franchise, and now Koei Tecmo is continuing with the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> universe.\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is far different this time around, as the game’s telling a canon story within the\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> story, tackling the events before Ganon’s victory over Hyrule.<\/p>\n

Of course, like any\u00a0Warriors<\/em> game,\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a> will have a multitude of playable characters from\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s universe. All of the brave fighters on that fateful day 100 years ago will finally have their chance to shine on their own. Each of the Champions of Hyrule will be playable, among other extra characters yet to be unveiled. Here’s every character in\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>: Age of Calamity<\/em>, and what their playstyle may be like.<\/p>\n

Of course, the obligatory main character would have to be Link. While he’ll be sporting some\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>flair<\/a> in appearance and fighting style, he’ll likely play very similar to his fighting style in the first\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>. Sweeping sword attacks with huge areas of effect, along with strong super attacks that can take out numerous enemies. Though his Sheikah Slate likely won’t be usable for obvious reasons, he’ll likely still have abilities like perfect parries and perfect dodges. There are different weapons throughout the game that Link (and presumably other characters) can use, which means the Master Sword may not come into play until halfway through the game. Though that’ll be interesting as well, whether or not the Master Sword does more damage to Guardian-type enemies.<\/p>\n

Something that fans have been asking of the mainline\u00a0Zelda<\/em> games for a long time<\/a>, Princess Zelda is also playable in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>. Though it appears she mostly functions in a magical capacity, she’s seen using the many abilities from the Sheikah slate as well. Depending on which point the player is throughout the story, she may be able to utilize her light arrows or light magic of some kind as well. Her playstyle looks very reminiscent of Lana from the first\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> game, or like the mage Lisa in\u00a0Genshin Impact<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Another fan favorite character is the Zora princess Mipha, a lance user with water magic as well. Mipha will definitely have a lot of ranged attacks to work with utilizing the Lightscale Trident, as well as having a huge radius of damage output around her. She’s also shown in the trailer using some kind of Final<\/em> Fantasy<\/em>,\u00a0Dragoon-like attack<\/a> to jump and leap down on enemies. The water effects themselves could just be visual flair, it’d be fun to see some kind of damage bonus come into play against fire enemies.<\/p>\n

Bringing the Goron heat into play, Daruk will be the resident heavy damage dealer in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>. Utilizing his iconic Boulder Breaker, Daruk will likely be a slow (at least, slow by\u00a0Warriors<\/em>\u00a0game standards<\/a>) and heavy attacker. His damage output will likely be massive to trade off for his slower attack speed, and he also has what looks like a fire-based special attack that shoots rising pillars up from the ground that explode upon impact. There’s also the possibility Daruk uses the traditional Goron rolling ability to either traverse or piledrive through several enemies.<\/p>\n

Fighting for the Gerudo, Urbosa gets to unleash her fury in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> as well. Urbosa’s weapons are the closest to Link’s, with her\u00a0Scimitar of the Seven sword and Daybreaker shield. Along with having a similar fighting style to Link, her defining factor will likely be her lightning abilities, even showing her scimitar imbued with lightning. She also showcases a perfect dodge ability, though it’s unclear if this mechanic will be available to all fighters in\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> or just her.<\/p>\n

Taking to the skies is Revali,\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s Rito champion<\/a>. Similar to Zelda, Revali will likely be some kind of ranged fighter with his Great Eagle Bow. While it’d likely be very unbalanced if Revali could just straight up fly, his moveset will likely have more verticality compared to the rest of the champions. While the sole attack shown in the trailer is a large bomb arrow AoE attack, it’d be interesting to see his Revali’s Gale wind ability implemented into his moveset as well. That would likely be some kind of aerial super attack that covers a large swath of the battlefield.<\/p>\n

Lastly, it’s very possible Impa becomes a playable character in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em> as well. Considering she was a former warrior who took part in that fight 100 years ago, it makes a lot of sense. Impa is teased in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em>‘s trailer as kneeling next to Link during a Hyrule throne room cutscene, but her actual fighting gameplay is not shown throughout the rest of the trailer. Impa’s moveset will almost certainly be more unique than ever before, as her\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> iteration won’t play anything like Impa in the first\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em> game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Perhaps more playable characters, like a certain other\u00a0Zelda villain, will be revealed in the next presentation on September 26. For now, there’s already a pretty huge and diverse roster coming to\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>: Age of Calamity<\/em>.<\/p>\n
