Although there were definitely some huge surprises, August was something of a quiet month in terms of new blockbuster releases, with\u00a0a small selection of titles hitting PC and consoles\u00a0during the month. That being said, it was far from a dead\u00a0few weeks for gaming in general, with\u00a0Fall Guys<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>launching to viral stardom and\u00a0Madden NFL 21\u00a0<\/em>receiving a ton of backlash<\/a> from its most loyal fans.<\/p>\n

Those wondering which games found the most success this month are in luck, however, with the PlayStation Blog revealing what the best-selling digital releases on the PlayStation\u00a0Store<\/a> for August 2020 were in Europe and the US. The results range from predictable to surprising, with the list offering\u00a0releases both new and old.<\/p>\n

Of course, taking the number 1 spot in the US was\u00a0Madden NFL 21<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>shocking nobody with its prominent place on the list. The franchise is obviously one of the most popular in the annual sports scene, and while the game’s reception has been far from stellar, EA can always\u00a0rely on the title’s yearly buyers regardless of the quality of the product. Second place went to\u00a0Call of Duty: Modern Warefare,\u00a0<\/em>third to\u00a0Ghost of Tsushima,\u00a0<\/em>fourth to\u00a0Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout,\u00a0<\/em>and fifth to\u00a0UFC 4.\u00a0<\/em>The top five are undeniably predictable, yet,\u00a0Cuphead\u00a0<\/em>managed to place\u00a010th on the list, which is great news for the incredible indie gem.<\/p>\n

The European top 10 is slightly different than the US, seeing\u00a0Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>takes the crown for most downloaded digital game. Of course, the title was free with PS Plus for August, meaning millions hopped online to play the newest battle royale gem, but its also just become a worldwide sensation regardless. Interestingly,\u00a0Madden\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t even make the list, with\u00a0Modern Warfare <\/em>taking second,\u00a0Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>grabbing third,\u00a0Ghost of Tsushima\u00a0<\/em>hitting fourth, and\u00a0UFC 4\u00a0<\/em>managing to land in fifth.\u00a0Cuphead <\/em>places in the top 10 for a second time, taking the eighth spot, while\u00a0The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt\u00a0<\/em>makes a surprising appearance\u00a0at ninth.<\/p>\n

Overall, it seems like an unpredictable month for Sony, who’s decision to make\u00a0Fall Guys<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>a free PS Plus title transformed it into one of the biggest games in the world. Seeing an independent title skyrocket so high up the best-selling chart for August is exceptional, even if\u00a0Madden, Ghost of Tsushima,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Call of Duty\u00a0<\/em>managed to beat it out in the US. It’ll be interesting to discover which games excel during\u00a0September, with this month seeing the release of\u00a0Mafia: The Definitive Edition\u00a0<\/em>alongside\u00a0the already released\u00a0Marvel’s Avengers\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2.<\/em><\/p>\n
