The studio released <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/new-dune-trailer-denis-villeneuves\/\">the first official trailer<\/a> for Villeneuve&#8217;s <em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0earlier this week and now a new video compares scenes from the preview to sequences from director David Lynch&#8217;s feature film adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>Based on\u00a0Frank Herbert&#8217;s novel of the same name, Lynch&#8217;s<em> Dune <\/em>starred\u00a0Kyle MacLachlan as lead character Paul Atreides along with an ensemble cast that included\u00a0Virginia Madsen and Max Von Sydow. Released in\u00a0December 1984\u00a0to negative reviews and poor box office figures, David Lynch disowned the theatrical cut of <em>Dune<\/em> and stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dune-remake-david-lynch\/\">he was denied creative control over the project<\/a> and final cut. As a result, some cuts of the film are credited to the\u00a0pseudonym filmmakers often use when they do not want to be associated with a project:\u00a0Alan Smithee.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dune-funcom-game-delay\/\">Dune Game from Funcom Still Years Away<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While <em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>has earned a cult following since its release, fans of\u00a0Herbert&#8217;s novel have varied opinions on the 1984 adaptation\u00a0and\u00a0Villeneuve has admitted to being <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/dune-reboot-denis-villeneuve-david-lynch-movie-reaction\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only half-satisfied with Lynch&#8217;s version<\/a>. The French-Canadian filmmaker finally got his own chance to adapt the novel with a new feature film adaptation from Warner Bros. that stars Academy Award nominee Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet in the role of\u00a0Paul Atreides. Now, IMDB has posted a new video\u00a0that compares\u00a0scenes from both Lynch and\u00a0Villeneuve&#8217;s versions of <em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>shot by shot to illustrate the visual similarities between both adaptations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CSPGQpCXc0c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to dismiss the new Dune as simply being a fresher version of the original&#8217;s visuals, but both trailers are pulling from the most dramatic moments of the novel: Paul training with Gurney, meeting the Fremen, running from a sand worm, being threatened with a Gom Jabbar. In fact, it&#8217;s likely the trailer was assembled specifically to play on the comparison, if only so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lKie-vgUGdI&amp;app=desktop\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fans of the first film<\/a>\u00a0could see that the new version wants to do right by the source material.<\/p>\n<p>Production on Villeneuve&#8217;s<em> Dune<\/em> took place in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dune-filming-hungary\/\">locations including Budapest<\/a>, Hungary, Jordan, Norway,\u00a0and Abu Dhabi. The new adaptation features an ensemble\u00a0cast that includes\u00a0Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. The film will cover the first half of Herbert&#8217;s novel as the first installment of a planned\u00a0two-part adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the visual similarities presented in the video, Villneueve and the crew\u00a0put in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dune-movie-sandworm-design-process\/\">a great deal of effort<\/a> to bring their own vision of the\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em> to life. Many fans of Herbert&#8217;s novel have suggested adapting the source material may be an impossible task and\u00a0moviegoers could find out if their suspicions are true when Villeneuve&#8217;s take on the story hits theaters in December.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the release date for\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em> could still be pushed back due to the domino effect caused by the COVID-10 pandemic.
