This past weekend,\u00a0Mulan<\/strong><\/em> debuted in Chinese movie theaters, and the reception was as cold as the avalanche from the animated film. Mulan,\u00a0<\/i>the latest live-action remake from Disney, debuted with only $23 million for the weekend box office. The news comes as a\u00a0substantial blow to Disney, who had been counting on the critical territory creating financial success for the controversial film.<\/p>\n

The news comes from Variety Magazine, which reported the loss and the controversial events that negatively impacted Mulan’s<\/em> appeal to China.\u00a0Mulan\u00a0<\/em>came in as the top grosser for the weekend in China, but only did marginally better than another release, the locally developed movie,\u00a0 The Eight Hundred<\/em>. The patriotic war film\u00a0was already on track to exceed Mulan’s<\/em> ticket sales, despite being similar in its content and releasing the same weekend.<\/p>\n

Mulan<\/em> has found itself in hot water the past few weeks, as\u00a0major news outlets recently reported Mulan<\/em> being shot in the vicinity of a massive genocide campaign<\/a> against Muslim ethnic\u00a0Uighurs. The\u00a0local government is thanked in the credits for being allowed to film in the province, leading Senator Josh Hawley (R- Mo), among others, to speak out against the film. As coverage of the controversy spread through international news markets, China\u00a0authorities attempted to minimize the impact by blacking out coverage of Mulan, <\/em>greatly reducing visibility for the movie.<\/p>\n

Mulan<\/em> has been no stranger to controversy. Last year, the film’s lead star,\u00a0Liu Yifei, publicly supported the Hong Kong Police Department<\/a> as they waged a brutally violent campaign against pro-democracy demonstrators.\u00a0 In addition to creative differences and multiple delays due to COVID-19, more controversy arose when\u00a0Mulan<\/em> was set to release for Disney+ subscribers for an additional $30<\/a>. Despite the various struggles the movie has faced,\u00a0Mulan<\/em>\u00a0has found mixed reception among critics, praising the visual scope of the movie but panning the wooden acting.<\/p>\n

Mulan<\/em> is now streaming on Disney+.<\/p>\n
