Helping propel the\u00a0series into stardom, the various adventures of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s cast helped solidify the JRPG series’ popularity worldwide. Games like\u00a0Persona 3\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Persona 4\u00a0<\/em>saw positive reception in the US before, but that was generally from JRPG audience.\u00a0Persona<\/em><\/strong> never really saw widespread acclaim before\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>, which would sell record numbers for the franchise and introduced a whole new fanbase to\u00a0Persona<\/em>. However, all good things come to an end, as\u00a0the studio presumably moves on to the\u00a0Persona 6<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for new fans,\u00a0Persona<\/em><\/a> is very much like\u00a0Final Fantasy<\/em> in one key aspect: every mainline entry is completely separate from one another. The Phantom Thieves fans have come to know and love have appeared in several of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> spin-off games, but once\u00a0Persona 6<\/em> receives an official announcement, that marks the end of their adventures. There’s already been hints of\u00a0Persona 6<\/em> being announced soon, but at the very least, the game is presumably in development. Saying goodbye at the end of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> was painful enough, but knowing the Phantom Thieves won’t come back could be worse.<\/p>\n

For Atlus and Sega,\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> and\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em> ended up selling record numbers for the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>franchise<\/a>. Previously, Atlus West had done pretty well localizing and releasing\u00a0Persona 3<\/em>\/4\/Golden<\/em>, but the majority of fans in the west were generally from the niche JRPG audience. Thanks to a lot of positive media coverage and praise from fans,\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s success ended up ballooning far beyond expectations. The stylish art style alongside a flashy turn-based combat system, paired with the endearing qualities of the social simulator, made\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> much more approachable than previous entries.<\/p>\n

Most of all,\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> was host to an incredible cast of characters and character designs that very quickly became iconic. “Best girl” arguments aside, the main cast of Persona 5<\/em> and\u00a0Royal<\/em> had incredibly unique personalities, Personas, weapons, and abilities.\u00a0Even Joker, the blank-slate protagonist for\u00a0Persona 5<\/em><\/a>, had his own aesthetic qualities and personality that made him stand out. Players enjoyed getting to know (most of) these characters over the hundred-hour playthroughs, as the Phantom Thieves ensemble was a big part as to why\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>\u00a0was so enjoyable by so many.<\/p>\n

While a\u00a0Persona 6<\/em> announcement could be coming in the next few years, the crew from\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> certainly aren’t done yet<\/a>. As with every\u00a0Persona<\/em> game, Atlus generally enjoys expanding\u00a0Persona<\/em> games with multiple spin-off titles. The same has proved true with\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>, with the\u00a0Dancing<\/em> series spin-off as well as\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em>. There’s still the potential for a few more spin-offs as well, such as the\u00a0Arena<\/em> fighting game spin-off that came out for\u00a0Persona 4<\/em>. Not to mention\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em> hasn’t been localized to other territories yet, so there’s still time.<\/p>\n

That being said, once\u00a0Persona 5 Scramble<\/em> is localized, the\u00a0Persona<\/em> series is presumably going to go dark for a while. As\u00a0production ramps up on the next\u00a0Persona<\/em> game, the marketing drip feed will begun and news will be sparse for a while. Granted,\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s development was elongated drastically due to a number of limiting factors like Index’s bankruptcy, so\u00a0Persona 6<\/em>‘s development time ideally won’t take as long<\/a>. Then again, issues with the pandemic could essentially do the same thing, so it’s a toss up for now.\u00a0Persona 6<\/em> is rumored to be in development, but for now nothing official has been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Persona<\/em> has generally always moved on to a new cast with the next mainline entry, but this time it will be especially sad. The Phantom Thieves became iconic for\u00a0Persona<\/em><\/a>, more so than any other main cast previously. Considering\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> was the most popular game to date, losing the Phantom Thieves will hurt at first. That being said, Atlus and P-Studio will take all of the beneficial improvements and innovations from\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> and incorporate them into a true next-gen experience with\u00a0Persona 6<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Persona 5<\/em> started life as a PS3 title in Japan, so there’s potential for a big jump in graphical fidelity and power for\u00a0Persona 6<\/em>.\u00a0The next entry will be better for it, but\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> and Phantom Thieves fans will still miss their heroes moving into the next game.<\/p>\n

Persona 6<\/em><\/strong> is rumored to be in development.<\/p>\n
