The Sims 4<\/a><\/em> added a new type of extra content, game packs. These packs are a middle ground between stuff packs and expansions. While they don\u2019t include as much as an expansion, they are less expensive and add much more to gameplay than stuff packs.<\/p>\n

Some of the game packs contain the strongest content currently in The Sims 4.<\/i> They allow a focus on one specific area, which has proved to be successful. They\u2019ve also allowed for some more unique types of content, which we\u2019ve not seen in the franchise before. So which are the best? Here are the 7 current game packs, ranked.<\/p>\n

Updated September 16th, 2020 By Helen Ashcroft:<\/strong>\u00a0Since this article was written game packs have continued to provide value and bring diversity to the game. Their position as a middle ground means more risks have been taken in their development, as we saw with Strangerville. They are expansive enough to allow new subjects to be explored but small enough that the price point is less of a barrier for those unsure about the content. Using game packs for new ideas also means that new gameplay aspects can be explored while still leaving expansions for large updates and more widely appealing topics.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nowhere has the concept of truly unique and new ideas been brought to The Sims 4 more than in the latest game pack, Journey To Batuu<\/a>. A crossover between The Sims 4 and Star Wars, this game pack has drawn huge criticism from a vocal section of the Sims community. So, how does it actually stack up compared to other packs, and what about Realm of Magic that came before it? This updated list places both packs in their rightful places in the ranking.<\/em><\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Outdoor Retreat<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The very first game pack, Outdoor Retreat,<\/i> has not aged well. It added a vacation world and new skills, traits and aspirations, centered<\/span> around outdoor activities. While the idea of a national park type world is great, many players don\u2019t use it on a regular basis, if they even use it at all.\u00a0There\u2019s also the issue that if you do want to go on vacation and you also have Jungle Adventure,<\/i> then Selvadorada offers more unique adventures.<\/p>\n

While the new skills are a nice addition, they are too tied to Granite Falls, the pack\u2019s vacation world. You have to spend a small fortune going on holiday in order to complete most of the new collections and aspirations. This makes the pack more limited than others and earns it a place at the bottom.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Dine Out<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dine Out<\/i> adds interactive restaurants to the game, allowing you to build<\/a>, customize, run, and visit your own unique restaurants. It should have been sitting high at the top of this list. The idea is fantastic and mostly it works well, the problem is that often it doesn\u2019t work at all. Restaurants are one of the glitchiest features in the game. There is so much potential in them but for some reason, the bugs have stayed in the kitchen. Squashing one only seems to lead to another. Some of them are mildly irritating but others will leave you frustrated and annoyed if they kick in, causing many to steer clear of restaurants entirely.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s these bugs that can make running a restaurant incredibly difficult, combined with the fact that it takes hours and hours of in-game time to go to the restaurant, order, and eat, which means that this pack is a great idea but often left untouched by players. Sadly that means it stays near the bottom.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Spa Day<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Spa Day<\/i> jumps above Dine Out <\/i>due to a strong build and buy catalog. The range of simple tiles for walls and floors often makes this a staple pack for builders. When it comes to gameplay, however, the pack is less enduring. It\u2019s fun to build and even visit a spa but that fun doesn\u2019t last. Spa Day<\/i> feels very much like a novelty pack in terms of enduring gameplay. While players with less than wholesome intentions may enjoy having a sauna in their house, to deal with unwanted visitors<\/a>, or build up their “social skills” with a partner, most of the gameplay doesn\u2019t work outside of a spa environment.<\/p>\n

The only skill commonly used separately is the wellness skill, which allows you to teleport at later levels, making it very handy. However, once it is maxed, many players won\u2019t revisit those yoga mats any time soon.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Journey To Batuu<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Journey To Batuu<\/em> is an experimental game pack<\/a> and if you feel like it succeeded or not will depend on many factors. For everything that it did right, there seems to be something it did wrong, and Star Wars<\/em> fans will get a lot more out of it.<\/p>\n

Batuu is a completely separate world and playing there can feel more like playing a spin-off than a game pack. Townies are separate, many are aliens and even their clothing is themed. You’ll see recognizable Star Wars<\/em> characters, ships, and locations as you explore this animated Batuu, a faithful recreation of the planet build in Disney’s theme park. The build and buy selection also has more numerous and versatile items than expected, alongside a range of clothing for all ages.<\/p>\n

Gameplay-wise the mission system is similar to Strangerville’s<\/em> storyline but adds repeatable quests into the mix. The tasks have reasonable variation, although as expected this does have limitations. The missions also make use of some mechanics from other packs, such as Jungle Adventure’s<\/em> temple exploration system being used for slicing control panels.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Strangerville<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Strangerville<\/i> game pack feels like an experiment in itself<\/a>. It marks the first time a game pack was used to tell a story within a story. The mystery of the town is incredibly engaging and the story is well thought out and fun to play. The problem is that once you\u2019ve played it there\u2019s no real reason to do so again, although you can if you choose.<\/p>\n

This pack ranks slightly higher than Journey To Batuu<\/em> due to the inclusion of Strangerville itself. The dessert town is interesting and unique and offers a different setting for your own stories. Even if you don\u2019t touch the main storyline again, there’s a lot of potential to build your own stories based on its events.\u00a0Strangerville<\/i> is quite a divisive pack but for fans of Strange Town from The Sims 2,<\/i> this feels like a fantastic flashback, allowing you to recapture some of that mystery.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Jungle Adventure<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

At first Jungle Adventure <\/i>seems like it will have no longevity, just another vacation pack. However, thanks to little touches based on new skills and the world\u2019s culture it\u2019s far more than that and sustains your interest for much longer. The world is stunning to explore but there are also many dangers. Exploring the temples is fun for longer, due to the presence of treasure and the variations in layouts. Navigating the hazards also adds a new dimension to exploration.<\/p>\n

If you visit the town area you can also engage with the locals and learn about their culture and customs, including new dances and food. The archaeology skill is also a nice touch, although is limited by its location in Selvadorada. You can freely build here, although it is a location world, and the scenery is to die for, quite literally.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Realm Of Magic<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Spellcasters are the main focus of Realm of Magic<\/em> and they use a skill progression system similar to vampires. There are different schools of magic to specialize in and many other aspects of magic to explore. Just head over to the new world of Glimmerbrook and find the entrance to the Magical Realm.<\/p>\n

Glimmerbrook is a small world but its main focus is to house the portal that allows sims to access the Magical Realm. Here you can learn magical spells and skills in Magical HQ, collect new potion ingredients from the gardens, challenge others to a magical duel and even find a familiar. Players will also be able to purchase a wand and ride a broom.<\/p>\n

The pack is packed with magical skills, items, and more but it falls below other supernatural packs<\/a> due to its glitches and the fact that you’ll often see magical townies running around, denting the immersion in a massive way.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Vampires<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

If you’re into gothic architecture or occult sims<\/a> then this pack is a must. It introduces the fully rounded out occult life state of vampires. As a vampire, you will grow in power and strength over time. There is a skill tree that enables you to add different abilities, powers, and weaknesses. This means you can truly customize the type of vampire you want to be. There\u2019s even an option to be a vampire who never drinks plasma from sims.<\/p>\n

While the world of Forgotten Hollow is small, it perfectly fits the occult vibe and the gothic build buy and create-a-sim items are very versatile. The only downside of this pack is that it sends vampires into your other neighborhoods at night, something which you can currently only prevent with mods.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Parenthood<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

If you’re looking for a game pack that gives you the best value<\/a> then Parenthood<\/em> is it. It adds a behavior and personality system to all children, meaning they can become good or bad, depending on how you parent them. The pack also adds some fun additions such as cursing, phases, acne, rebellion, and even school projects.<\/p>\n

Combined with a good range of create-a-sim and build and buy items this game pack is the stand out so far. Being able to shape your child\u2019s manners and other similar traits means that your sims can have a lasting effect on their children, who will gain traits based on their childhood skills and interactions with others.\u00a0Parenthood <\/i>is an absolute must for anyone who plays with families. It will allow in-depth, realistic, and engaging gameplay in every family you create.<\/p>\n
